The Second Stage Theatre on 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue in New York City

Second Stage Theatre is a contemporary American Off-Broadway theater company. It was founded by Carole Rothman and Robyn Goodman in 1979. The name refers to the intention to give 'second stagings' to contemporary American plays that originally failed to find an audience due to scheduling problems, inappropriate venues or limited performance runs.

Second Stage provides rising authors with their Off-Broadway debuts; and produces shows by America's most respected playwrights. The production of plays focuses on artistic process rather than the product. The supportive environment allows for artists to try new roles, production designs and writing techniques. Audiences are an essential factor in program development at Second Stage Theatre. Second stage is dedicated to building future audiences by educating teens about the art of contemporary theatre and encouraging their participation in the cultural life of New York City.

[edit] History

Second Stage Theatre was founded by Carole Rothman and Robyn Goodman in 1979. The goal of Second Stage was to offer a home for past plays that deserved a chance to go back and work on their shows. These early shows were given a renewed life. Second Stage’s first season kicked off in 1979. The venue for the theatre moved around in the first couple of years, until Rothman and Goodman found their permanent home at McGinn/Cazale Theatre in 1984. Although the original idea of Second Stage was to avoid competition for new plays, Rothman and Goodman fell in love with productions that they couldn’t resist introducing to their audiences.

In 1999, Second Stage moved from their uptown location of 20 years, into their new home on the corner of West 43rd Street and Eighth Avenue. Previously a bank, the 1929 structure was redesigned for the stage by world renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

It was announced on July 17, 2008 that Second Stage has acquired the right to purchase the Helen Hayes Theatre, a 597-seat house located at 240 West 44th Street in midtown-Manhattan. Programming will begin in 2011 at this theatre, and Second Stage will continue to produce shows at the 305 West 43rd Street theatre as well as uptown at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre.[3]

[edit] Uptown series

[edit] Overview

The summer series was created as a program to help develop and provide exposure for the voices of a new generation of theatre artists. It has helped launch and advance the careers of several up-and-coming playwrights, including Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Adam Bock, Rajiv Joseph, and Dan O'Brien.

The series seeks to develop the skills of emerging playwrights, to provide early-career artists with the support of a major artistic institution and to create new plays for the American Theatre. Most importantly, these Uptown writers have never been produced in New York City prior to their Uptown debuts, making Second Stage Theatre a gateway between a plethora of young American talent and the New York theatre scene.

The plays are presented in Second Stage's original and intimate theatre, the McGinn/Cazale, on Broadway and 76th Street on New York City's Upper West Side.
