[edit] Club career

St Ledger is a central defender by trade but has played on either flank, and midfield during his spell with Peterborough United. He joined Stevenage Borough on-loan in January 2004 alongside Richard Scott, but he failed to make an appearance, only making it onto the bench twice.

St Ledger featured in Sky's Big Ron Manager, a behind the scenes look at Peterborough United's struggle to enter the League 2 play offs at the end of the 2005–06 season. St Ledgers' attitude came in for much criticism by Posh fans and he took some of the blame for their failure to reach the play offs.

Impressive displays linked him with a move to Birmingham City.[citation needed] However, it was Preston North End that made a firm bid and he joined them on a three year contract for a fee of £225,000 on 7 July 2006. Sean was a firm fan favourite at Deepdale, and many Preston fans were sad to see him leave the club in 2009.

On 15 September 2009, it was announced that he had agreed to join Middlesbrough on an initial three month loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer in the January transfer window. He will wear the number 12 jersey, like at Preston North End [2]. He made his full debut for Boro on 19 September 2009 in a top-of-the-table clash against West Bromwich Albion. St Ledger scored his first goal for Middlesbrough against Coventry in late September and followed this by scoring his second two games later in the club's away win over Reading. St Ledgers' loan deal at Middlesbrough came to an end on 14 December 2009.

[edit] International career

Steve Staunton learned of his qualification for the Republic of Ireland through his grandfather, who is from Carlow, and he was called into the squad for the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier against Germany.[3] He was only able to feature on the bench.[4]

St Ledger was announced as a member of the squad for the Republic of Ireland's friendly against Nigeria on May 29 2009,[5] and started the match at centre-back alongside Richard Dunne in the 1-1 draw.[6] He played from start to finish at the same position in the Republic of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Bulgaria in Sofia on June 6 2009.

St Ledger scored his first goal for Republic of Ireland in the 2-2 draw with Italy at Croke Park, Dublin, in a World Cup qualifier on October 10 2009.[7]
