Originally from Bendigo, Victoria, where he attended Catholic College Bendigo, Selwood was recruited from the Bendigo Pioneers with the West Coast Eagles' fourth pick and number 22 overall in the 2007 AFL Draft. He was retained in the team for the Round 4 match against the Sydney Swans, but was dropped after a poor performance, obtaining only nine possessions.
Selwood returned to the senior side in Round 16, three months after his previous game, against the Brisbane Lions at the expense of veteran Michael Braun. Although a poor performance, amassing a six possessions, he was retained for the unexpected win against St Kilda. This time he gave a greater output, gaining a career high 15 possessions and also scoring his first goal. Selwood is currently trying to have a regular place in the senior side.
