[edit] Early days

Born in Manukau, New Zealand, on 28 June 1981 to Samoan parents, Demetrius Savelio enjoyed hip hop music from a young age. It was in these days that he got his stage name, "Savage".

Back in the days when I was bustin’ to my friends, one of them said I sounded like a savage. I joked about it and laughed, but then I liked the name because it reminded me of how i looked so much like the getaway driver on snatch.

Savage joined with his friends to form a hip-hop group, the Deceptikonz, in 1997. Success was not instant, however, as the group struggled through several talent shows and small concerts. Their big break finally came in 1999 when, thanks to a cousin of Savage, they were signed to New Zealand hip hop label Dawn Raid Entertainment.

[edit] The Deceptikonz

Released in March 2002, the Deceptikonz album Elimination, which included the song "Fallen Angels", debuted at #2 on the RIANZ New Zealand Top 40 albums chart.

[edit] Solo career

Savage recorded over 40 songs during a 12 month recording regime before finally selecting the final line up for his album Moonshine (Demitrius does not drink).

Production duties on the project were handled by Mareko, Nate D of R.E.S, Adeaze Alavante AKA BeatKamp and Atlanta resident Sol Messiah, who had flown to New Zealand and spent two weeks manning the drum machine and keyboards at Dawn Raid Studios.

Savage worked with R&B singer Akon on a remix of Akon's US top 10 hit "Locked Up". The international remix with Savage on the A-side features Styles P from the Ruff Ryders label.

Savage appeared with David Banner on the international remix of "Ain't Got Nothing" which helped to solidify his name internationally.

In March 2009, Savage appeared in the issue of Source Magazine of the United States to discuss the lyrical meanings behind the songs off his album Savage Island.

[edit] Film

"Swing", written by Sean Hooker can be heard in the 2007 comedy film Knocked Up during the club scene.
