Sathyabama University (Tamil: சத்யபாமா பல்கலைக்கழகம்) is a private university at Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, founded in 1988 as Sathyabama Engineering College by Jeppiaar Educational Trust formed in 1987 & inaugurated by former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Janaki Ramachandran. It was formerly known as Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (SIST). The college is headed by Dr. Jeppiaar, a former politician under the late M. G. Ramachandran. The college is reputed for its student placements,discipline and good facilities. It is a Christian Minority Institution. The Ministry of Human Resources Development declared the college as a Deemed University under section 3 of the UGC Act, on 16 July, 2001[1]. The University, more specifically its engineering departments, have a record 334 tie-ups with various companies including DRDO and ISRO for conducting various forms of research. Many students who passed out from this university are in respectable positions in companies in India and abroad.[citation needed] One of the Best colleges where discipline is more of education .
[edit] Accreditation and CertificationSathyabama University has been accredited with a grade of B++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)[2]. [edit] Geographical LocationThe university is located about 15 kilometres from Adyar in Chennai. The university is situated next to the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) also known as the IT Corridor. The university is also accessible by the East Coast Road (ECR). [edit] Academic DepartmentsThe institution was established primarily as an engineering college. Currently, the university consists of the following academic departments.[4]
[edit] PlacementThe number of students placed has increased dramatically over the years. The college has a very good reputation with respect to its placements. As per the university rules each student is allowed to be placed only in one company. Multiple placements for a single student are not permitted. Students wishing to go for higher studies are not permitted to attend placements. Majority of these placements are in IT companies.'Core companies' take very few students from the college. Every year, the college manages to get more than 90% of the eligible students placed in various companies, with an average salary package of around 2.75 lakh rupees per annum. Around 1444 students have been placed in the academic year 2007-08 as on 20-03-2008[5]. [edit] FacilitiesThe Institution has 120 buses which are made available to the students and the staff members for commuting not only from various points in the city and also from the suburbs. Buses are operated for free of cost with the policy of a seat for all. Students are not permitted to use other public or private transport facilities[6]. The university has men's and women's hostels which provide on-campus accommodation for students. The varsity also has a Central Mess which provides food to both day-scholars and hostellers.
