Sathyabama University (Tamil: சத்யபாமா ப‌ல்கலைக்கழகம்) is a private university at Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, founded in 1988 as Sathyabama Engineering College by Jeppiaar Educational Trust formed in 1987 and inaugurated by then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Janaki Ramachandran. It was formerly known as Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (SIST). The university is headed by Dr. Jeppiaar, a former politician under the late M. G. Ramachandran. The institution is reputed for its student placements, discipline and good facilities. The varsity is a Christian minority institution.[1]

The Ministry of Human Resources Development declared the college as a Deemed University under section 3 of the UGC Act, on 16 July 2001.[3]

The university has undertaken various sponsored and collaborative research and development projects funded by national organizations such as Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), National Institute of Ocean Technology, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). The university holds great promise to expand the applications of space technology, benefiting the common man and enriching the quality of life in association with ISRO. The university is successfully conducting non formal education programmes through 18 Village Resource Centres all over the state of Tamil Nadu.[1]

Sathyabama University has been accredited with a grade of B++ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[4]

The university has also received ISO 9001:2000 certification.[5]

The university is located in the suburb of Sholinganallur about 15 kilometres from Adyar in Chennai. The university is situated next to the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly known as Old Mahabalipuram Road and also popularly known as IT Corridor). The university is also accessible by the East Coast Road (ECR).[6]

The number of students placed has increased dramatically over the years. The college has a very good reputation with respect to its placements. As per the university rules each student is allowed to be placed only in one company. Multiple placements for a single student are not permitted. Students wishing to go for higher studies are not permitted to attend placements. The majority of these placements are in IT companies. 'Core companies' take very few students from the college. Every year, the college manages to get more than 90% of the eligible students placed in various companies, with an average annual salary of approximately Rs.2.75 lakh. Around 1444 students have been placed in the academic year 2007-08 as on 20-03-2008.[8]

The Institution has more than 100 buses which are made available to the students and the staff members for commuting from various points in the city and also from the suburbs. Buses are operated for free of cost with the policy of a seat for all. Students are not permitted to use other public or private transport facilities.[9] The university has men's and women's hostels which provide on-campus accommodation for students. The varsity also has a Central Mess which provides food to both day-scholars and hostellers and can accommodate up to 2000 people at the same time.
Indian Bank has an extension counter and an ATM on campus. The university has a reverse osmosis plant installed to cater to the drinking water needs of students, faculty and staff.
