It is located on the south coast of Brazil between the south 27° latitude and west 48° longitude. The island covers 523 km² and is approximately 54 km long (North-South) and 18 km wide (East-West) at its widest point in the north of the island, with a total area of 424.4 km²,

It is the site of the state capital Florianópolis as well as numerous beach resorts, such as Canasvieiras and Cachoeira do Bom Jesus. It is connected to the mainland by three bridges, though one of them (Hercilio Luz Bridge) has been closed since 1991.
