Samsunspor are a Turkish sports club based in Samsun. Samsunspor are currently playing in the Bank Asya 1. Lig. Samsunspor also had a men basketball team and played in First League in 1972-73 season and were closed in 2006. Samsunspor women basketball team was founded as "Samsun Namık Kemal Lisesi Spor Kulübü" in 2003 with green-black colours and renamed as "Samsun Basketbol Kulübü" in 2007 and colours red-white-black. Samsun Basketbol promoted to Women Basketball First League in 2008 and plays in it.

Their original colors were Red and White. The team's official third color 'black' was added to the uniform after tragic accident in 1989, which cost the lives of four squad members.

The Club shined in the late 1980's in the Top Division of the Turkish Soccer and produced three back-to-back top 4 finishes. But a tragic bus accident on 20 January 1989, ended the most successful era of their league history. Two main players (Mete Adanır and Muzaffer Badaloğlu) and coach Nuri Asan were dead at the site of the accident, also several players were left seriously injured. Also Emin Kar, who was Samsunspor's defender and captain, was left paralyzed and Erol Dinler, who was Samsunspor's midfielder, lost the use of one of his arms. Emin Kar and Erol Dinler retired due to the accident. Zoran Tomic, who was Samsunspor's second goalkeeper, died after a coma, which lasted 6 months in a hospital in Yugoslavia. Fatih Uraz's vertebrae was broken in the crash. He was Samsunspor's and Turkish National Team's first goalkeeper before the accident and didn't regain his position after recovery. He was replaced as the goalkeeper of the Turkish National Team by Engin İpekoğlu and played a few matches in Beşiktaş between 1989-1991.

Samsunspor also played in Turkish Cup final in 1988 and lost title to Sakaryaspor by 3-1 aggregate.

The Club have been in a deep and growing financial crisis since 2004 and have lost their prime time.
