Sami Moubayed is a Syrian political analyst, journalist, and author based in Damascus, Syria. He is editor-in-chief of Forward Magazine published in English in Syria. His articles on Middle East affairs have appeared in a variety of newspapers, including al-Ahram Weekly, Gulf News, The Daily Star, and Asia Times and an online panel with The Washington Post. He is the author of several books on modern Syria.
[edit] BiographyMoubayed studied at the American University of Beirut and obtained his PhD in Middle East Politics from the University of Exeter. He currently teaches at the Faculty of International Relations at al-Kalamoun University in Syria and serves as a member of the university's Board of Trustees. He is also Vice-President of Haykal Media, the publisher of Forward Magazine. Over the last ten-years, Moubayed has interviewed leading regional and international figures, like German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, and Lebanese President Elias Hrawi.In December 2008, he was the first Syrian journalist to interview a US president, being ex-President Jimmy Carter, during the latter's visit to Damascus. The interview was published in Forward Magazine, the 1st Syrian media outlet to publish an article of the caliber. [edit] WorksHis works focus on Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine. He is the co-creator of www.syrianhistory.com, an online museum of Syrian history. It contains over 4,000 photographs, documents, and rare audiovisual material on Syria during the years 1900-2000. Moubayed has written much about pre-Baath Syria, and is a specialist on former Syrian President Shukri al-Quwatli, whose biography he authored in a book entitled "The George Washington of Syria" (Beirut, 2005). He has currently finished writing a television script for a 30-episode series on the former Syrian leader, which is due for release in 2009.
