Salman Ali Shaikh
Born September 23, 1952

Salman Ali Shaikh is the current Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. Prior to being appointed as Chairman SECP on April 13, 2009, Mr. Shaikh served as the Acting Chairman SECP and Commissioner SECP, Specialised Companies Division.

Salman was born on September 23, 1952, the only child of Wazir Ali Shaikh, a senior civil servant, (who served as the Chairman CDA and Federal Secretary Industries, Fuel, Power and Natural Resources), and Iffat Ara, daughter of Mian Muhammad Sharif of the Mian Family Bhagbanpura. After doing his BA at Government College Lahore, he did his B.Sc (Honours) at the London School of Economics in History and Economics.

The professional experience of Mr. Shaikh spans 34 years, mainly in banking and finance. He has worked as a senior emerging markets banker with an expertise in large-scale debt recovery/remedial banking, financial sector restructuring, and regulatory/legal reforms. His expertise also includes senior management, corporate rehabilitation/restructuring and capacity building/target market cluster selection in the SME sector. He is regarded as the country’s leading authority on corporate distress and remedial banking.

Mr. Shaikh is currently serving on various focused groups and task forces with the Government of Pakistan, other regulatory agencies (State Bank of Pakistan, Federal Board of Revenue and the Competition Commission), and internationally (Asia Pacific Real Estate Associationand the International Organisation of Pensions Supervisors). He is also the head of a committee constituted by the Government of Pakistan to review and finalise the draft Corporate Rehabilitation Act (CRA).

Publications

Salman is married to Humaira Mumtaz of the Fazal Din Group family. He has three children: Nabiha Meher, Kamil Kamran and Abeera Amal.
