[edit] History1956 may well be described as the dawn of a new era in Goan football, amidst the hustle and bustle of hawkers and ships coming into the port with goods in this busy port town of Vasco, was founded a football club that would go on to occupy a place of unspeakable pride in the chronicles of the history of football in India. It was the birth of a dream, a dream that was conceived in the heart of the football loving Mr. V.M. Salgaocar, founder President of the VM Salgaocar Group of Companies, to give a platform to the Goan youth to showcase their talent to the country, and to the world. The year 1961 saw India liberate Goa from the rule of the Portuguese. Goa was now a territory of the Indian Union. A year on in 1962, Salgaocar Football club became the first Goan team to be extended an invitation to play in the prestigious Durand Cup in New Delhi, and such was the joy of a Goan team’s participation in the Durand Cup, that the Late Prime Minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru felicitated the team at his residence. Salgaocar successfully annexed all possible trophies on the Indian circuit thereby etching their name amongst the top teams in the country. A National League triumph in 1999, 3 Federation Cups in 1988, 1989 & 1997, the Super Cup in 1997 & 1999, the prestigious Rovers Cup, Mumbai, in 1989, 1996 & 1999, the Durand Cup, Delhi, twice in 1999 & 2003, the Sait Nagjee, Calicut, in 1987 and TFA shield at Madurai, in 1979. Salgaocar Sports Club have also been crowned Goa State Champions for a record 19 times including winners for 3 consecutive years of the Goa Professional League in 2002-2003, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. The Club also won the Governor’s Cup in the years 1999 and 2001. The late 1980’s and the 1990’s saw Salgaocar SC consistently bag trophies such as the Federation Cup, the National League, the Durand Cup, Rovers Cup and the Super Cup, thus justifiably earning the sobriquet “Soccer Kings”. Such was Salgaocar Sports Clubs consistency in winning tournaments year after year that their exploits soon became folklore. Federation cup wins in 1988, 1989 and 1997 saw Salgaocar Sports Club represent India as its Champion Club at the international level in the IX & X ASIAN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS in 1989 at Muscat & 1990 at Dhaka respectively and in 1999 in the IX ASIAN CUP WINNERS CUP. Though the team didn’t progress through the next rounds in all the editions, they did remarkably well against their highly illustrious opponents. Players like Bruno Coutinho, Bramhanand Shankhwalkar went on to win the Arjuna award, the highest sports recognition in the country. Lawrence Gomes, Franky Baretto, Bento Andrew, Arnold Rodrigues, Roy Baretto, Derrick Pereirra, Savio Madeira, Candidio Abreu, Menino Figuereido were legends whose fame extended well beyond the sandy shores of Goa thus not only permanently engraving their names in the history of the club and the hearts of its fans, but also as top quality Indian players who earned laurels for the country. The last few years, one may describe as one that has seen the glory years seem light years away. Relegation, a successful promotion, and then again relegation has left the Salgaocar faithful shattered. Critics have been swift in writing the club off, but as the adage goes, “What maketh a man isn’t how he falls, but the grace by which he rises up again.” Salgaocar Sports Club, backed by the VM Salgaocar group of companies, the main sponsors, makes a promise to the legion of Salgaocar faithful that they will regain their past glory again. [edit] Salgaocar Youth Development SystemIn 1956, the club was founded with a purpose, a dream, the dream of Mr. VM Salgaocar, Founder Chairman of VM Salgaocar Group of Companies, to promote Goan football talent. The dream lives on till today. At Salgaocar SC, we firmly believe that this football fanatical state of Goa, long celebrated for the countless talents it has produced for the Indian blue, has many a raw talent that just needs the right guidance and coaching inputs to carve a niche at the National stage. To keep this dream alive, Salgaocar SC have gone about in right earnest by investing considerably in a youth development programme aimed at nurturing youngsters and moulding them into top quality players who will bring unspeakable pride to the club and the nation. No stone is left unturned to ensure that sufficient training facilities and equipment is made available. Such has been the success that many of our junior players have already made to the senior grade. With as many as 7 age-group teams from U-12 till U-20, there are around 200 ‘future stars’ currently learning the art of being a successful footballer under the tutelage of our qualified team of coaches. Over 1000 youngsters vie for a slot in the team every year during extensive trials. This not only shows the yearning amongst the youngsters to don the green and white but also shows that parents are sheltered in the conviction of our abilities to help their wards football dreams. The Youth Coaching Wing comprises Mr. Francisco Bruto da Costa, Technical Director - Youth Development, who has an AFC ‘A’ License. He is aptly assisted by 3 coaches, Mr. Micdomio Rebello (AFC ‘B’ License), Mr. Augustine Antao (AFC ‘C’ License) and Mr. Peter Fernandes (GFA 'D' Licence). Mr Anthony Noronha is the Manager of U-12, U-14, U-15 and U-16 age group teams, whilst Mr. Ignatius Dias is the Manager for the U-18, U-19 and U-20 teams. As part of our initiative to promote football at the grass root level, we have formed an effectual understanding with 2 leading football schools in Goa, namely Loyola High School and Mae dos Pobres High School. Under the aegis of these understandings, all football activities of these schools are sponsored by Salgaocar Sports Club. Besides, our qualified coaches train the school coaches with modern methods of coaching. Talented youngsters from these schools are then drafted into our junior teams paving the way to don the illustrious green and white. [edit] Current statusThe last few years for the Salgaocar club can be described as the years of glory light fading away. Relegation, a successful promotion, and then again relegation has badly shattered the Salgaocar faithful. Even the critics have been two harsh in their comments by writing that the club hay days are over, but as the famous saying goes, “What makes a man isn’t how he falls, but the grace by which he rises up again.” Salgaocar Sports Club backed by the VM Salgaocar group of companies shows hopes to the host of Salgaocar faithful that they will try their heart out to gain their past glory again. Under the patronage of Shivanand Salgaocar the club is making evident efforts to rise over again and mark its presence once again.[2] [edit] Performance in AFC competitions
