History of Adapazarı Adapazarı; in the north food of Samanlı and Keremali Mountains; is in the middle of a vastmeado watered by the River of Sakarya from the centuries. It is a late period of Ottoman city. Adapazarı is next to Historical Silkroad and Ottomans Bagdat Road, and also in the crossroads of İstanbul and Anatolia. From the excavations and historical knowledge we understand that the region was under the sovereignty of Bitinya whose capital was Nikomedya (İzmit), between B.C. 300 and A.D. 395; the river in the middle of the regionhad teh name of Quin Sangarius. Findings from Kandıra, Kaynarca, Kaymas, Hendek, Karapürçek and Taraklıshow that Bitinyas lived in the region between before and after the B.C. From the castles in Sayfiler, Harmantepe, Tersiye, Paşalar, Çobankale, and Mekece and the famous bridge which was built by II. Justinyanus in 562 we learn that Adapazarı region was the intersection point of the civilizations during the history.


After Bitinyas,in A.D. 395 Est Rome Empire ruled in the region and a village was formed in the district we call Tığcılar today.Adapazarı was canqured by Ottomans in 1326. İf we inspect the district names around Adapazarı, for exemple. Erenler, Özbek, Şeyhler, Dedeler, Dodurga we understand that it was effected by the muslim Turks in a short time. Some of the Otoman monuments such as Elvan Bey İmarethanesi (1450) in Geyve, Şeyh Muslihittin Mosque (1481) İn Kaynarca, II. Beyazıd Bridge (1495) in Geyve and Yunus Paşa Mosque(1517) in Taraklı are still the unwipped foodprints of Ottoman Empire.

Tığcılar village which was canqured by Ottomans in 1326 become an attractive settlement and got the name Adakarya (Ada Village). Later, Semerciler, Çıracılar, Pabuçcular, joined to the village and had the name Adapazarı, it was a village in 1563, region in 1746, town in 1837, municipality 1868. The first Mayor of the city was Zaguncu İbrahim Bey. Aziz Duran is the 64’th Mayor of the city. The population of city center is 184.000 and total 306.000. İt become a metropolitan municipality in March 2000.



Many buildings, were constructed and pulled down in different times. Some of the mayors give important services in the city. For exemple İbrahim Begovic build the park in 1950. it was the first open and green area for the public in city history. İzzet Şükrü Enez opened Atatürk Park and Enez Park in 1950, Ali Necdet Güven built Atatürk Boulevard in 1960, General Sedat Kirtetepe opened Şemsiyeli park in 1962. Selahaddin Gürdrama, Behçet Deryaoğlu, Ünal Ozan opened other parks and streets. The last Mayor Aziz Duran has been the mayor of the city for ten years. He opened a lot of new streets in the city such as Bosna Street, Ahmet Yasevi Street, Sabahattin Zaim Boulevard, Serdivan Street, Karasu Street, University Street, Yenikent Hospital Street, Yeni Cami Boulevard...Kent Park 2008, Orman Park 2006 are newest parks.

The first mosque in Adapazarı is Orhan Mosque, Orta Mosque was built in 1760, Ağa Mosque in 1790, Tozlu Mosque in 1837, the new form of Orhan Mosque in 1892. The first education foundations in the history of Adapazarı are Sabiha Hanım Primary School (1820), Ali Bey School, Adapazarı High School (1915), Mustafa Kemal Paşa School (1919) and Büyük Gazi Primary School (1925), Cumhuriyet Primary School (1928).

Greek and Armenian people started to settle in the town in 1850’s and the people from Balkans and Caucasus in 1865. Adapazarı become the trade center in Uzunçarşı, Tenekeciler, kasaplar, abacılar, Aynalı kavak, Bakırcılar, Ayakkabıcılar Çarşısı. 13 merchants started Adapazarı İslamic trade Bank (Later Türk Ticaret Bank) in 1913. Then Arapzade Sait Bey and partners started Adapazarı Emniyet Bank in 1919. These show that Adapazarı was the centre of trade in these times. The chamber of trade and commerce was opened in 1924.

In the industry history Adapazarı big Flour Factory was opened in 1910, and silk factories in the same years. In 1915, Adapazarı Deta (iron and wood) Factory was opened for the needs of the army. One of the most important factory during the 1930 was Adapazarı cloth factory. In pres history; Yergir (country) Newspaper in Armnian in 1909, Adapazarı Newspaper in 7 March 1919 are the first newspapers. Nearly 50 daily and weekly papers were published. Today 7 daily papers are in the media. They are Adapazarı Akşam Haberleri (Evening News), Yeni Sakarya, Anadolu, Yenigün, Yeni Gazete (New Newspaper), Sakarya Büyükşehir (Sakarya Metropolitan).

The magazines: Zafer Science and Research Magazine (19.769). Irmak Culture, Art Magazine; Green Monthly Magazines; and Adıyok is a seasonal Literature Magazine. The state owned industrial factories are Turkey Agricultural Equipment (T.Z.D.K.) Factory (1943), Turkey Railway Truck Factory (1951), Sugar Factory (1952), Tank and Track Factory (1976). The Private Sector Factories are Uniroyal Tire Factory (1958) (it became Goodyear later) Otoyol (1966), Fruehauf (1974), Goetze Factory (176), Toyotasa Factory (1992)



Same of the famaus writers and poets are these: The divan poets Güvahi (1526), Seyyid Osman Adapazarı. The storyteller Sait Faik Absıyanık (1906 – 1954), Novalist Kerim Korcan (1918 - !990); poet and writer Faik Baysal (1922 – 2002), Teymur Ateşli, Aşık Deryami. Cüneyd Suavi, Neceti Mert, Hatice Bilen Buğra, Ayfer Tunç are living writers.

Aphorism writer Mehmet Selahaddin Şimşek (1953 – 1994), lyrics writer Halit Çelikoğlu. Painters Mustafa Tömekçe, Sabiha İslam, Orhan Dayal, Şadan Bezeyiş and Balkan Naci İslimyeli. Photographers are Hüsnü Gürsel, İbrahim Zaman. Calligrapher Saim Özel.Caricaturirists Sezgin Burak (1935-1978), Sami Caner and Osman Suroğlu. Melike Kurtiç in Ceramics, Ziya Taşkent, Zeki Gündüz, Esin Engin, Ethem Acar in music.The Famaus producer in Türkısh cinem Hürrem Erman are the famous people from our city. The old General Manager of TRT Macit Akman, and the present manager Şenol Demiröz, Uğur Dündar, Bülent Özveren, Mehmet Alkaş and Sabri Ugan are all from Adapazarı.

There are three football clubs in Adapazarı berween 1920-1950,they are İdmanyurdu, Hilalspor, Gençlerbirliği. They all became one club in 1946 with the name of Adagençlik. Yıldırımspor came the first among amateure tems in 1961. Sakaryaspor started in 1965. It was the champion of second league in 1981, 1987, 1996. They won turkey cup in 1998.



There are many famous footballers playing in the Turkey leauges. For exemple Oğuz Çetin, Hakan Şükür, Aykut Yiğit, Aykut Kocaman, Recep Çetin, Tuncay Şanlı. And there are also very succesful trainers and sportsman Yılmaz Vural, Abdulkadir Aypek, Erdoğan Çamlıyurt, Selçuk Şahin, Orhan Aldinç, Şansal Büyüka. There also many famaus wrestlers from Adapazarı. Exemple: Adil and İrfan Atan are head wrestlers in Kırkpınar. Mithat Bayrak and Hakkı Başar are the champions of Olimpics. And Erol Kemah is the second in the world. Semih Saygıner who is the World Billard Shampion, is also from Adapazarı.

In Earthquake on 1999 was 4000 peoples died.


Adapazarı gets a lot of migrations from many different regions especially from Balkans and Caucasus. It is one of the fast developing, peaceful, calm, Anatolian city in route of İstanbul and Ankara.
