[edit] History
In 2006, SJI, upon the urging of the Economic Development Board of Singapore, has opened an international school. SJI International has begun classes in January 2007. Andrew Bennett, a former Principal of the United World College of South East Asia, has been appointed the first Head of School of SJI International. To safeguard the Catholic and Lasallian ethos in the new school, the Board has also appointed SJI's former Deputy Principal (Student Development) Bro. Michael Broughton as the Brother President of the School. Lawrence da Silva, a former Director of the United World College of South East Asia heads the Governing Board of the School. Mr Bennett and Mr da Silva would recreate a partnership that led to UWCSEA's outstanding IB results in previous years. [edit] Association with SJIThe realisation of the vision of SJI International has been a labour of love for a team of SJI Old Boys. Having benefited so profoundly from their own SJI education, they have sought a way to offer girls and more boys a similar life changing experience. This dedicated group comprises the Board of the new school. SJI International is driven by the same values as SJI Independent even though the practices differ in several respects, not least because of the coeducational, pre-university and international dimensions. SJI is a Catholic school founded by the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1852. It carries the tradition of St John Baptist de La Salle, the French priest who in 1680 started this order of religious Brothers to provide education for poor boys in France. It welcomes boys of all faiths to be part of its inclusive community. Like SJI International, its school mission states: ‘Enabling youth to learn how to learn, and to learn how to live, empowering them to become men of integrity and men for others.’ SJI has been notable over the years for its capacity to develop leaders of Singapore society, including members of the current government. Good discipline and strong student teacher relationships help to create a positive atmosphere and the rich range of co curricular activities ensure that the boys’ lives are enriched by constructive interests. SJI prides itself on the fact that no boy is ever turned away because he cannot pay the fees. Underpinning the remarkable success of SJI has been the role played by the De La Salle Christian Brothers. They place a major emphasis on the need to give special care to each boy and are held in the highest possible esteem by generations of SJI old boys. [edit] The BrothersThe Institute of the Brothers of the Christian School were invited to establish SJI in 1852. Except for a short break of five years, they have been here since that time. They were founded in 1680 by a French priest, John Baptist De La Salle. He had been deeply moved by the way in which "the children of the artisans and the poor" were abandoned and left to themselves. He became aware, that unless something was done, many of these children would be lost to their religion and to society. He devoted himself to forming schoolmasters totally dedicated to the education of the young people especially the poor. He brought these teachers together in a community and subsequently founded with them the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This group of men chose to be called "Brothers" since it was their desire to be brothers to each other and older brothers to the young people they taught. Alert to the needs of his time, La Salle was an innovator in the development of teacher training programmes and in curricular and teaching practices. Very early, he recognised that the work of teachers was not merely a job or an occupation, it was a vocation, a special calling worthy of respect. God was calling them to make a difference in the lives of the children confided to their care. That is still their mission. Today there are 7000 La Salle Brothers and 75 000 lay Lasallian teachers working in 85 countries around the world, teaching 900 000 students in 1000 Universities, Schools and Special Education Centres. SJI International is one of these Lasallian Institutions. [edit] MottoThe school motto - "Ora et Labora", Latin for "Pray and Work" is a reflection of the twin pillars of the La Salle Brothers, Faith and Zeal.
