[edit] History

The birth of SIM University took more than 12 years of preparation. The seeds were sown in 1992 when the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) appointed the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) to collaborate with The Open University of the United Kingdom (OUUK).

This collaboration saw the offering of the Open University Degree Programme (OUDP), and the first intake of students numbered 900. There were only three degree programmes to choose from.

In 2002, the OUDP was granted accreditation status by OUUK and renamed SIM Open University Centre (SIM-OUC). With accreditation, SIM-OUC enjoyed greater flexibility in designing and directing its academic programmes. It also began an internal restructuring process in preparation for achieving its vision of becoming a full-fledged university.

On April 14, 2005, that vision was realised when MOE granted SIM the approval to form SIM University – Singapore’s first privately-funded university - in January 2005. With its founding, UniSIM assumed direct responsibility for SIM-OUC’s enrolment.

In 2006, His Excellency, Mr S R Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore accepted the invitation to be UniSIM’s patron.

In 2007, all UniSIM degree programmes were approved by MOE as a means for non-graduate teachers to upgrade their qualifications.

From July 2008, eligible adult Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents at UniSIM will enjoy up to 40% tuition fee subsidy in the form of a tuition grant from the Singapore government for pursuing their degree programmes as part of their continuing education and training.

The university launched the first local university part-time accountancy degree and part-time logistics degree in 2008. In 2009, the university launched the first local early childhood education degree.

[edit] Admissions

The university caps its annual intake to about half of the applications received. Short-listed candidates may be required to undergo one or more interviews and take written admission or other evaluation tests.

Applicants must meet all of these requirements to enter UniSIM:

  • GCE 'A' Level or a Diploma from one of the five polytechnics in Singapore
  • Two years of work experience or be employed on a full-time basis
  • 21 years old or above

[edit] School of Science and Technology

[edit] General Studies Programme

The General Studies programme gives adult learners the flexibility to design their own programme of study, picking courses from one or more disciplines, from the arts and humanities, to business, science, technology and human development and social services. The resulting programme, which can be pursued at leisure, may be specialised or multi-disciplinary in nature. Students can pick up certificates, a diploma or even a degree.

Face-to-face lectures and tutorials accompany the course materials such as CD-ROMs, video and audio programmes as well as printed and web-based texts. Learning is supplemented by academic counselling, e-mail and discussion forums. Students may enrol in a single course unit, a number of course units, a diploma programme, or an undergraduate programme. They can graduate as soon as three years or take up to eight years to complete a basic degree.

[edit] Campuss

SIM University shares its facilities with SIM at the SIM Headquarters, located at 461 Clementi Road. It has two other centres – SIM Clementi Centre at 535A Clementi Road and SIM Management House at Namly Avenue. The three centres occupy an area of 60,000 square metres.

[edit] SIM Headquarter

The SIM Headquartershouses lecture theatres, tutorial and seminar rooms, computer laboratories, two cafeterias, a multi-purpose hall that can seat up to 1,600 people and a Management library. The majority of programmes and student activities are held here. Other facilitiese include ATM machines, AXS machine, SingPost S.A.M self-service machine, and a postal box service. 223 parking spaces are available at the basement and other surface car parks in the campus.

[edit] SIM Clementi Centre

The SIM Clementi Centre is the Administration Office of the university. It is adjacent to SIM HQ and houses a total of 20 lecture theatres and tutorial rooms, Electronic Labs, Multimedia (PC & Mac) Labs, Interpretation Labs, Bio-Medical Lab, Bio-Mechanical Lab, ICT Network Lab, SAP Training Lab and Audio Presentation Lab.

[edit] Campus Development

SIM announced a plan to expand its Clementi campus at a platform topping up ceremony on October 9 2009. The SIM Campus Development Master Plan, which will cost $300 million and be completed by 2014, will be implemented in two phases. It will give an additional 56,000 square meters of space, more than doubling the campus size.

With the incentive of a MOE subsidy of up to 40% for its students introduced in 2008, UniSIM has seen a substantial jump in its enrolment. It now has some 10,000 students, compared to 8,000 in 2007. This number is expected to grow by another 40% to 14,000 by 2020. UniSIM caps its annual intake to only about half of applications received due to limited facilities.

The new campus extension will allow UniSIM to meet demand for places which it is not able to meet at the moment. To support UniSIM's growth in student population, more staff will also be required and the new extension will allow UniSIM to house staff from its four academic schools within its own premises.

[edit] Financials

SIM is the first education provider to make the Fastest Growing 50 (FG50) companies list. The FG50 is compiled by business and credit information provider DP Information Group. To qualify, a company must achieve at least 10 per cent annual turnover growth for the previous three years, while remaining profitable each year. Qualifying companies are then ranked according to their three-year compounded annual growth rate (CAGR), with the top 50 receiving an award. Over the past three years, SIM Pte Ltd has recorded a CAGR of 820.8 per cent. 16 of the companies earn up to $100 million a year and 14 others generate between $100 and $250 million a year, six of this year's FG50 companies generated more than $1 billion in sales.
