Sükhbaataryn Batbold (Mongolian: Сүхбаатарын Батболд) is the Prime Minister of Mongolia.[1] He was previously the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of his predecessor, Sanjaagiin Bayar.
[edit] Education and Personal LifeBatbold attended the 14th high school in Ulaan Baatar. Afterwards, he studied in Russia at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations between 1980 and 1986. Batbold also studied at the London Business School in 1991, and the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Moscow in 2002.[2] Batbold previously headed Altai Trading Co. Ltd., which among others owns the Chinggis Khaan Hotel and the Skytel cellular operator from 1992 to 2000. The company is now headed by his wife. [3] He is once divorced and has a total of 5 children with his second wife. [edit] Political careerBatbold was elected twice as a Member of Parliament, and was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2000-2004 and Cabinet Minister of Trade and Industry between 2004-2006.[4] In addition, he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2008 until his nomination to prime minister-ship in 2009. During his tenure as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, he hosted United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Ulan Bator to discuss climate change in Mongolia.[5] Batbold also substituted for then Prime Minister Bayar at a Prime Ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.[6] [edit] ControversiesIt is rumored that Mr. Batbold is one of the richest men in Mongolia,[7] as he owns several companies, including Altai Holdings LLC and Altai Trading LLC. Apart from that fact, Batbold is alleged to have significant interests in various mining operations, which lead to several controversies, including that Batbold used his position as Minister of Trade and Industry to benefit himself by selling the Boroo Gold Mine site to Centerra Gold.
