São José do Rio Preto is a city and county (município) in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. County Area: 434.10 square km; population (IBGE/2007): approx. 402.770.

The city was founded on March 19, 1852, by João Bernardino de Seixas Ribeiro.^[1] It is the commercial, industrial, and agricultural center of the Northwestern region of the State. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of São José do Rio Preto.

Rio Preto, as the center of an agroindustrial region (Northwest of São Paulo's State), has a well evolved Commerce and Service sectors. The city has stores of the Carrefour, Wal-Mart Supercenter, McDonald's Restaurants and many other multinational corporations. As a major finnancial center of the region, São José do Rio Preto has about 67 branchs (bank agencies). The GDP per capita of the city in 2006 was R$ 13,795 (IBGE/2006)^[2].

There are two football (soccer) clubs in the city: América and Rio Preto. América usually plays at Estádio Benedito Teixeira, which has a maximum capacity of 40,000 people. Rio Preto plays at Estádio Anísio Haddad, which has a maximum capacity of 25,000 people.
