Career highlights and awards

Ryan Adam Spilborghs (born September 5, 1979, in Santa Barbara, California) is a Major League Baseball outfielder with the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies drafted Spilborghs in the seventh round of the 2002 draft out of the University of California, Santa Barbara. He played for the Madison Mallards during the summer of 2001 during his collegiate career. Spilborghs is of mixed descent, as his father is Belgian, and his mother is Guatemalan.

On July 20, 2009, Ryan's wife gave birth to their daughter and first child. Her middle name, Esperanza (which means hope in Spanish), was chosen after his mother's first name, who died during spring training earlier in the year.

[edit] Baseball career

Spilborghs has served as a utility outfielder for the Rockies since 2007. He began the 2007 season at AAA with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, after being beaten out for a roster spot by veteran Steve Finley. After Finley was released by the Rockies, Spilborghs returned to the team. In 2008, he made the team outright from spring training, serving as the fourth outfielder.

With the departure of center fielder Willy Taveras prior to the 2009 season, Spilborghs has been one of the Rockies' starting outfielders, rotating among all three positions but most often serving as their left fielder.

He also played in the Mexican Pacific League for the Yaquis de Obregón, playing center field.

On August 24, 2009 in the 14th inning against the San Francisco Giants, Spilborghs homered off pitcher Merkin Valdéz for the first grand slam walk-off home run in Rockies history.

[edit] Entrance music

The song that plays when Spilborghs comes to bat is "Eye of the Tiger" by American rock band Survivor.
