Royce Spencer Clayton (born January 2, 1970 in Burbank, California) is a former Major League Baseball shortstop. He was drafted out of St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, CA in the first round (15th pick overall) of the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants, and made his major league debut for the Giants on September 9, 1991. In 1997, he was selected to represent the St. Louis Cardinals at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. In the 2002 film The Rookie, Clayton is played by Jorge Sanchez in a brief appearance[citation needed]. The 1999 time frame portrayed in the film shows Clayton playing for the Texas Rangers.

On November 29, 2006, Clayton agreed to a one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. [1]. On August 7, 2007, the Blue Jays released him.

On August 23, 2007, Clayton agreed to a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox, and was assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

On September 1, 2007, Clayton was called up to Boston Red Sox when major league rosters expanded to 40 players.[2] Although inactive for the World Series, Clayton finally earned his first World Series ring when the Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies in the 2007 World Series.

' After the 2007 World Series, Nike released a hooded sweater Of the Red Sox, Clayton's name appeared as well as the 38 other members of the team as well as the coaching staff. People were shocked because David Ortiz's name did not appear on the sweater, and Clayton had only been with the team since August. Clayton retired after the 2007 season.[3]
