The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, traces its origins to 1505 when the Barber Surgeons of Edinburgh was formally incorporated as a Craft Guild of Edinburgh, and granted a royal charter in 1506 by King James IV of Scotland. HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is the current Patron of the College.

In 2004 the College embarked upon the first of two commercial ventures, with the opening of the Surgeons' Hall conference venue, following this up in November 2006 with the launch of Ten Hill Place Hotel, an innovative hotel whereby income generated assists in providing surgical skills and health provision to those areas of the world that need it most.
