Robert D. Cardona, c. 1988

Robert D. Cardona (born in Southern California, March 7, 1930) is an American writer, producer, director and animator, who has enjoyed the majority of his success in Britain. His best-known work was with his long-term working partner: David Mitton. Their most famous productions are Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, which Cardona produced until 1986 (the second series), and TUGS, which consisted of thirteen episodes highly sought-after today. He only wrote the TUGS Episode "Warrior". He has also worked on such British live shows such as The Flaxton Boys, The Four Feathers, Thriller, Fraud Squad, Crime of Passion, Emmerdale & Virgin of the Secret Service. He is also the co CEO of Clearwater Features.

Cardona emigrated to Canada in the early nineties, and - still having concepts around the idea of tugboats in mind - played the role of director on Theodore Tugboat. He also provided TUGS footage for the show Salty's Lighthouse.

His son, Tarquin Cardona, wrote the TUGS episodes "Pirate" and "Quarantine." Tarquin now works as a successful director and photographer in NYC with his wife Jennifer.
