Robert Lazaro Andino (born April 25, 1984 in Miami, Florida) is a Major League Baseball infielder for the Baltimore Orioles of Puerto Rican(paternal) and Cuban(maternal) descent. Not of Dominican descent as assumed. Andino, drafted in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2002 MLB Draft, came up through the minor leagues with, and made his major-league debut for, the Florida Marlins. As a native of Miami, Andino was a local product to the Marlins, who initially saw him as their "shortstop of the future". However, other players knocked him out of that role. Most notably, prior to the 2006 season, the Marlins acquired Hanley Ramírez, who became their starting shortstop immediately and became an All-Star in 2008. On April 1, 2008, Andino hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning off New York Mets reliever Matt Wise for his first career home run.[1] Andino was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on April 1, 2009 in exchange for pitcher Hayden Penn.[2] He made his first appearance for the Orioles on April 9, 2009, pinch-hitting for César Izturis and striking out in his only at-bat. He has proved to be a very reliable shortstop for the Orioles when their starter Cesar Izturis went on the DL. During that period he exhibited many acrobatic defensive plays, and shows true promise in the future.[3] [edit] References[edit] External links
