Rinat Leonidovych Akhmetov (Ukrainian: Рінат Леонідович Ахметов, Russian: Ринат Леонидович Ахметов, Tatar: Ренат Леонид улы Әхмәтов; born on 21 September 1966 in Donetsk) is a Ukrainian business man, multi-billionaire, and president of SCM Holdings, as well of the Ukrainian football club Shakhtar Donetsk. He graduated from Donetsk National University with a degree in economics in the mid 1990s.

According to Korespondent magazine, Ukraine’s Top 50 richest people has Rinat Akhmetov ($21.1 billion) number one as the richest man in the CIS, as well as the richest man in Europe. ^[1] According to Forbes' The World's Billionaires 2009 Rinat Akhmetov is nr. 397 most richest in the world with 1.8 billion $ .

Akhmetov was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, to a Tatar working-class family.

Akhmetov became the head of Donetsk City Bank and a specialist in the banking sector^{[citation needed]}. In 1996 he became the president of the football team, FC Shakhtar ^[2] and has held this post since then.

Since March 2004 Rinat Akhmetov has been president of System Capital Management Group (SCM), which he also founded^[3].

Akhmetov founded SCM in 2000, and it has grown to be one of Ukraine’s leading financial and industrial firms ^[4] with revenues of $9.719 billion dollars in 2008^[5].

In May 2009, Akhmetov Metinvest purchased West-Virginia based United Coal Company for an estimated $1 billion ^[6].

In 2007, Akhmetov founded the Foundation for Effective Governance^[7] to support economic development of Ukraine. On 6 December 2007, FEG was launched in Kiev with a goal to improve the standard of living of each Ukrainian citizen^[8]. Among the figures who addressed the opening of the foundation were Nobel Laureate Shimon Peres and Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto^[9].

Akhmetov is involved with charities and philanthropies that are often humanitarian, and often to support causes that assist Ukrainian citizens. The Foundation for the Development of Ukraine is stated to be "determined to eliminate the roots of social problems..." in the Ukraine^[10]. The foundation donated nearly $900,000 to families of victims of gas explosion that tore through an apartment complex in Dnipropetrovsk^[11]. It has been reported the organization is planning to spend $150 million to fulfill its programs^[12], and that Akhmetov will be the foundation's president.

Akhmetov played an important role in the 2004 presidential election as a sponsor of Viktor Yanukovych, who was the prime minister at the time.
