Riddlesdown Collegiate is a secondary school located in the Riddlesdown area of the London Borough of Croydon, England. Riddlesdown is a mixed school, of 1902 students (311 of those being post-16 students). The School takes its pupils mainly from the Sanderstead, Selsdon, Purley, New Addington and South Croydon areas, and recently gained Specialist Science College status. Its current motto, as of 2007, is "Learners of today, Leaders of tomorrow" as voted for by the school's student body. Riddlesdown is the largest school in Croydon in terms of pupil numbers. From the current academic year (September 2009 Onwards), the schools name changed from Riddlesdown High School to Riddlesdown Collegiate, featuring different coloured 6 colleges; four of which will hold a mix of years 7-11, a Creative Performing Arts college and a Sixth Form college.
[edit] OFSTEDThe School has recently undergone an OFSTED inspection[1]. The majority of the results were Grade 3 (broadly average or below average), with some Grade 2 (generally above average). Compared with the previous 2005 inspection[2], which contained mostly Grade 2 results with some Grade 1 (exceptionally and consistenly high) and few Grade 3. The school has changed a lot throughout the years. Although it is surrounded by a Green Belt, it has been able to expand greatly. Recent notable extensions;
In 1992, Riddlesdown was the first school in Croydon to be awarded Grant Maintained status by the Secretary of State for Education, and since then about 300 pupils have been admitted to the school by the Board of Governors each year. In 1999, a Sixth Form Centre was established on the site and Riddlesdown became a Voluntary Aided School under the Bourne Foundation. [edit] School CouncilSince 2007, Riddlesdown has had an active school council which gives pupils the opportunity to suggest and make constructive changes to the way in which the school operates. The first committee was chaired by Christopher Etheridge, and its first action was to hold a competition to select a school motto. The motto chosen was "Learners of today, leaders of tomorrow". [edit] UniformThe current Riddlesdown uniform, for Years 7-10 consists of one of four ties, depending on which college you are in, (Pegasus-purple, Aquilla-blue, Phoenix-maroon and Orion-green) shirt or blouse, outer blazer with school badge on (a plain black jumper is optional) and trousers or skirts that are charcoal grey. Shoes must be black and not have high heels, or be ‘trainer like’. The year 11 uniform is different with a coloured jumper (of the college; same colours as above) and black skirts for girls. Riddlesdown believes that in keeping with tradition girls should have to wear skirts. Recent consultation with parents showed no interest in allowing girls to wear trousers. However, year 11 girls are allowed to wear trousers if they wish to do so. Year 11 wear no blazer but instead a coloured jumper, the colour is dependent on which college you are in. Previous years have been chosen by the year group as a whole. Sixth form own clothes apply. [edit] Notable alumni
