Richard Ladislaus Heschl (July 5, 1824, Welsdorf[1], nearby Fürstenfeld, Steiermark - May 26, 1881, Wien) was an Austrian anatomist. In 1849 he received his medical doctorate from the University of Vienna and in 1850 became an assistant to Carl von Rokitansky (1804-1878). Later, he became a professor at Olmütz (1854), Krakow (1855), Graz (1861) and Vienna (1875). While at Graz University, Heschl was appointed Rector, and after his death in 1882, his position was succeeded by Hans Kundrat (1845-1893) at the University of Vienna.

Heschl is credited as the first physician to describe the transverse temporal gyrus or Heschl's gyrus in the temporal lobe. This anatomical structure processes incoming auditory information.
