Rancho Bernardo is a master-planned community[citation needed] in the northern hills of the city of San Diego, California, San Diego County.
[edit] GeographyThe topography of RB consists of canyons and rolling hills. It is a sprawling community, with shopping malls, golf courses and office parks typical of San Diego development. The community is located next to Rancho Santa Fe, about 20 miles (32 km) north-north-east of downtown San Diego, immediately north of Carmel Mountain Ranch, northwest of the city of Poway and south of Escondido. [edit] HistoryIn 1789 King Ferdinand VII of Spain issued a land grant as La Cañada de San Bernardo (or "The Gorge of Saint Bernard").[citation needed] This earlier history of the Gorge of Saint Bernard is largely irrelevant to the present-day. In the 1960s, Rancho Bernardo real estate obtained incorporation with the approval of the AVCO Community Developers.[clarification needed] On October 22, 2007 the Witch Creek Fire burned through Rancho Bernardo and several other populous areas of San Diego County, destroying hundreds of houses. The neighborhoods of the Trails, Montelena and Westwood were the main areas hit in Rancho Bernardo. [edit] Economy[edit] TourismThere is an annual carnival-type street fair, RB! Alive, during the summer.[1] [edit] IndustryRancho Bernardo is home to Corporate Headquarters of Sony US, the first integrated television factory opened in the U.S. by a Japanese company[2] Other companies in the area include Hewlett-Packard, the Eastman Kodak Company, and BAE Systems. Located in a 685 acres (277 ha) business park, there are approximately 50,000 workers employed by these companies.[citation needed] [edit] EducationThe area is part of the Poway Unified School District.
