Ramapo High School is a comprehensive four-year public high school located in the affluent New York City suburb of Franklin Lakes, in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is not to be confused with the high school in Ramapo, New York bearing the same name. The school is a part of the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District, serving students from Franklin Lakes, Oakland and Wyckoff (FLOW).

As of the 2007-08 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,300 students and 85.0 classroom teachers (on a FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 15.3.[1]

The other high school in the district is Indian Hills High School, located in Oakland.

The school was the 23rd-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools. The school was ranked 28th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which included 316 schools across the state.[2]

[edit] University Programs

The school, in tandem with its district sister school, offers several special programs not unlike college majors, wherein students accepted into one of the programs take a series of Honors-level courses, in lieu of electives. Ramapo offers three University Programs: Engineering; Communications: Television, Audio, & Film; and Theatre Arts. Students in the Communications and Theatre Arts programs have the opportunity to serve as interns for Skyline Theatre Company, a professional theatre organization housed in the district.

Ramapo competes in the North Bergen Interscholastic Athletic League. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Raiders.

The school was recognized as the Group III winner of the NJSIAA ShopRite Cup in 2005-06. The award recognized the school for achieving a tie for 3rd in Girls Soccer, 2nd in Girls Volleyball, a tie for 3rd in Football, 1st in Softball, 1st in Boys Golf, 1st in Boys Lacrosse and 2nd in Boys Tennis.[4] The school repeated as the Group III winner of the NJSIAA ShopRite Cup in 2006-07. The award recognized the school for achieving 1st place in Girls Soccer, 2nd in Boys Soccer, 3rd in Girls Tennis , 3rd in Boys Fencing, 2nd in Girls Indoor Track and Field Relays, 1st in Girls Indoor Track and Field, 2nd in Softball, 2nd in Boys Lacrosse and 1st in Girls Track and Field.[5]

The girls' soccer team tied Freehold High School 0-0 in the Group III championship game held on November 28, 2006, at the College of New Jersey, with both teams sharing the co-championship.[6][7] In 2007, the girls soccer team won the North I, Group III state sectional championship with a 2-0 win over Northern Highlands Regional High School in the tournament final, the team's 14th sectional title in the past 16 years.[8][9]

The softball team won the 2007 North I, Group III state sectional championship with a 2-0 win over Paramus High School.[10]

In 2007, the girls tennis team won the North I, Group III state sectional championship with a 3-2 win over Northern Highlands Regional High School in the tournament finals.[11] The win was the team's second consecutive title, and the 21st in team history.[12]

The 2007 boys soccer team won the North I, Group III state sectional championship with a 2-0 win over Morris Hills High School in the tournament final. The win was Ramapo's fifth sectional title since 2002.[13][14] The team moved on to win the Group III state championship with a 1-0 win over Ocean City High School.[15] The win was the team's fourth state championship, and their first since 2002.[16]

The 2007 girls track team won the State Group 3 indoor and outdoor titles, led by senior Kesley Ramsey, junior Amy Salek, sophomore Erin McKenna and sophomore Meg Downey. The first three, along with junior Colleen Sullivan, finished second in the prestigious Penn Relays distance medley relay in a Bergen County time of 11 minutes, 56.59 seconds.[17]

The 2007 Boys and Girls Soccer teams went to the New Jersey Group 3 state championships, the boys winning and girls losing. Boys were lead by senior John Fiorenzo, juniors Rob Santaniello, Chris Kuehn, Will O'Connor and Tom Breault.

The 2008 Boys and Girls Soccer team both had winning seasons. The Boys were County Champions beating private school Don Bosco Prep. They were defeated in the state semi finals by Millburn High School. The Girls lost in the County Championship to top seeded private school Immaculate Heart Academy. They then became state champions by defeating Freehold High School in the finals.

The 2009 Wrestling team won its first league title by defeating Old Tappan in a 28-28 tie. The tie was broken from the "Second Tie Breaking Criteria: Most Matches Won". Ramapo had 8 wins while Old Tappan had 6 wins. There are currently two wrestlers who are part of the "100 Win Club". They include 2005 graduate Jimmy Schulz, and 2009 graduate Chris D'Amico

The debate team (composed of Ryan Jacobs, Jeff Luppino-Esposito, Kevin Miller, and Ben Segal) won the 2007 state title in the JP Morgan Chase Lincoln Douglas Debate tournament. They also were victorious at the league and county level to take their first ever triple crown of debate.[18][19]

The DECA team of Sean Munier, Sacheev Mandhle and Gary Higgins dominated the regional competition in 2008 to be upset in the states. In February 2009 Steven McNamara and Matthew Esposito stunned the Bergen County High Schools when they were awarded first place in the regional competition and were awarded fifth place in the state competition

Members of the Academic Decathlon Team, Matthew Keller '09, Tom D. Hoesly '09, Jamie S. Miller '09, Kerrian Zier '09, Taylor Duffy '09, and Luke Menken '09 reached the third round of News 12 New Jersey's The Challenge (game show). The Academic Decathlon team was also awarded first place overall in the regional competition, and second place at the state level. 2009 graduates Matthew Keller and Tom Hoesly each won the gold medal for highest score in their grade divisions at both competitions.
