Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, centered in Bangalore, India, is a unitary university set up in 1996 by the government of Karnataka, India, for the regulation and promotion of higher education in health sciences throughout the state of Karnataka.
[edit] ProfileThe establishment of the university was directed by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Act of 1994. About 276 colleges throughout the state, affiliated with different universities, that were conducting courses related to medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing were placed under the Rajiv Gandhi University in order to establish uniform standards in academics and administration. The institution is named after former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. Originally it was centered in Mysore, but in 1998 the Karnataka State Legislature directed that it be moved to Bangalore. [edit] Testing problemsIn 2006, the university was the subject of a government inquiry when evidence was revealed that professors had provided students with copies of a post-graduate entrance exam beforehand.[1][2] The university had earlier had problems with the same exam when errors in the optical mark recognition answer sheets of the test were discovered.[3] University students had claimed earlier that same year that the test was unfairly skewed to benefit more privileged students.[4] [edit] References
