Rabat (or Ir-Rabat) is a village just outside Mdina, Malta. The name of the village is derived from the Semitic word for 'suburb', as it was the suburb of the old capital Mdina. Half of the present-day village core also formed part of the Roman city of Melita, before the latter was resized during the Fatimid occupation. The population of Rabat is 11,462 (Nov 2005). Parts of the film Munich and Black Eagle were shot in Rabat. The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the Republic of Malta is seated in this city. The Local Council of Rabat is also the administrator of Baħrija.
[edit] CatacombsRabat is home to the famous Catacombs of St. Paul and of St. Agatha. These catacombs were used in Roman times to bury the dead as, according to Roman culture, it was unclean to bury the dead in the city (Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of an ancient Roman city). The Catacombs were also where early Christians secretly met and performed Mass until Constantine I made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire and therefore stopped persecuting Christians. The Catacombs are now looked after by Heritage Malta, the organisation which looks after most of the museums and temples in Malta. Part of St. Paul's Catacombs, the part accessible from the Parish church which is dedicated to the same Saint, was where, according to tradition and as recorded in the Bible, St. Paul stayed for three months when he was shipwrecked on the island in 60 A.D. Photo circa 2004 - http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3475839 Anthony M. Brincat (response to Times of Malta Article 24 Oct 2009) Congratulations to Mr Charles Mangion for restoring this gem. May other "private hands" follow his example. I know of other chapels which belong to private individuals, but unfortunately are not well cared of and their condition is deteriorating. Incidentally the Tal-Virtu chapel is not 500 years old. Although a chapel had existed there since 1438, the present edifice was built in rotunda form between the years 1717-1731 by Master-mason Petruzzo Debono who may have also been responsible for its design, inspired by Mattia Preti's church of Sarria in Floriana. Sculptors Benedetto Saliba and Antonio Fabri worked on its sculptural decoration. Vincenzo Baita painted the titullar altarpiece and there were four other paintings by Enrico Reynaud. In 1901 a statue of Christ the Redeemer, made in Rome, was placed on the dome, but this was too heavy and began to cause structural defects to the dome. It was removed in 1935. The chapel was last used in 1936.
