Raaz (Hindi: राज़, Urdu: راز, translation: Secret), directed by Vikram Bhatt, is an unofficial Bollywood adaptation of the film What Lies Beneath.[1] The film is based on the story of a couple who have moved to Ooty to save their failing marriage. However, what they find in their new home is more than they expected when a ghost starts haunting the place. Sanjana suddenly finds that her husband is part of the ghostly conspiracy, which she must fix in order to escape.[2]

It was one of the top grossing films of 2002. Bipasha Basu went on to be praised for her role in the film, and was even nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award. Raaz also marked the debut of actress Malini Sharma.

[edit] Plot

The story first begins with a couple of college students playing a game. A girl named Nisha is asked to kiss her boyfriend but instead of kissing him, she runs into the woods. She then experiences an evil spirit in her presence. The next scene, the girl is being tormented by the evil spirit and is in the mental hospital. Meanwhile Professor Agni Swarop (Ashutosh Rana) says that an evil spirit is tormenting the girl. The girl dies.

In Mumbai, Sanjana Dhanraj (Bipasha Basu) is a lonely wife of a businessman Aditya Dhanraj (Dino Morea). At a party, they had an argument which ends up Sanjana taking her husband's keys and tries to return home by driving madly. On her way, she hears someone whispering her name and when she turned around, the car then meets up with an accident. At the hospital, Sanjana asks Aditya for divorce but Aditya says he was sorry and wants to make up the time he has lost with her. Sanjana then asks him to take her to Ooty, where they started their relationship first. After coming to Ooty, Sanjana and Aditya stay at their farmhouse. While trying to enjoy their time together, instead, Sanjana starts facing eerie and unearthly situations. Also one of their servants went missing for eight months. She contacts her friend Priya (Shruti Ulfat) who takes her to Professor Swarop. He then tells her than an evil restless spirit is living inside the farmhouse. Aditya doesn't believe in all these things and forbids Professor Swarop to his wife any further. Later on Sanjana sees the spirit and realized that it was a girl. Meanwhile, Sanjana, Priya and Professor Swarop discover a gun and soon finds that it was owned by a former colonel. They go to his house thinking that he murdered the girl. However the colonel says that the girl was his daughter who is mentally ill and one day she locked him in his room and ran away with his gun to avoid going to a mental institution. Later on, Professor Swarop gives Sanjana a book to invite the spirit to see the purpose of the haunting. Sanjana invites the spirit. She finds out that the girl (Malini Sharma) had an affair with her husband Aditya. However Aditya broke off the relationship but the girl became obsessive and soon she committed suicide. Since she committed suicide inside their house, Aditya and the servant buried her in the woods. After hearing this, Sanjana leaves Aditya. Meanwhile, Professor Swarop asked Sanjana to go back to Aditya since he said that the purpose of the spirit is to kill Aditya and take his soul with her. In the next scene, Sanjana then takes Aditya to Mumbai. However the real Sanjana comes home with Professor Swarop and Priya and they realise that Aditya has left with the spirit. While driving, Aditya tries to persuade Sanjana to forgive him and when the girls turn around and show a disfigured face, the car skids over the cliff with Aditya in it. In order to save her husband's life, Professor Swarop says that the best thing is to burn the girl's body buried by Aditya and his servant. However while they try to burn the body, they encounter several paranormal forces trying to stop them. However soon, Sanjana manages to burn the corpse and the spirit is destroyed. Aditya's life is saved now and they live happily ever after.[3]

[edit] Box Office

Raaz was released in the first half of June. Though not expected to be a success, 2002 was a year in Bollywood cinema when only a few movies had succeeded in the box office. But Raaz was accepted gratitously and went on to become the third highest film of 2002, behind Devdas.
