Răzvan Lucescu (born 17 February 1969, Bucharest) is a Romanian former football goalkeeper and currently the football manager of Romania. He is the son of football player and manager Mircea Lucescu. At Rapid Bucharest, Razvan Lucescu was also known as José Mourinho of Giuleşti. On the 29 April 2009 he was appointed head coach and general manager of Romania, replacing Victor Piţurcă in this position. [1]
[edit] Player career[edit] 1987-2003No significant performances, he played only in the first Romanian league (Divizia A), at the following teams:
He sums up 249 matches played in the 15 seasons, with an average of 16.6 matches/season played. His best achievement is winning the championship in his last year as a player, in 2003 (season in which he played one match and has been the vice-president of the club as well). Worth mentioning is the second placed occupied in 1997, with FC National (he then played 31 matches)[2] [edit] Coaching career[edit] FC Brasov (2003-2004)Razvan first coached FC Brasov in the 2003-2004 championship for 15 matches in the first league.
[edit] Rapid Bucuresti (2004-2007)In 2004, he was named coach of Rapid Bucharest. In his first season, he qualified to play in the UEFA Cup, finishing 3rd in the domestic league. In the 2005-2006 season, he had a dramatic start to the season, being dismissed for one night, before the owner of the club, George Copos, decided to take him back. Razvan and his players worked harder, managing to beat teams such as Feyenoord Rotterdam, Shakhtar Donetsk (the team that his father was managing), Hertha Berlin and Hamburg SV, eliminating them from the competition. Rapid was taken out by Steaua Bucuresti after two draws [3]. He finished on 2nd place, after being on 6th at the half of the season. The 2006-2007 season was not as good; Rapid got eliminated in the UEFA Cup in the group stages after 4 draws[4], and finished 4th. However, in 2007 Razvan decided not to continue with Rapid, after a fallout with some of the supporters and several disagreements with the club owner. He opted to return to FC Brasov. Razvan won the Romanian Cup with Rapid in 2006 and 2007 (the latter one giving Rapid permission to participate in the 2007-2008 UEFA Cup).
[edit] FC Brasov (2007-2009)Razvan decided to start all over and, instead of accepting to manage bigger teams from abroad, he decided to coach FC Brasov (also see Brasov), who relegated 2 years before and just finished 10th in the first group of the Romanian second league. (see Liga II, Liga II in Romanian, or RomanianSoccer.ro (at 2006-2007 section)) He did not disappoint, and promoted from first place (see Liga II 2007-08). Bringing FC Brasov back in the first league, Razvan has proposed to make history, by trying to win a Romanian Cup or qualifying to the UEFA Cup.
