<--Quisqueya is one of the words used to name the island of Santo Domingo by pre-Columbian Caribbean people (Hispaniola was never legally accepted by any of the owners of the island through history, according to all international treaties involving the island). The other word used is Haiti. The island is occupied by two different nations. One of the nations, occupying 1/3 (The Western part) name the country Haiti, while the other country is only known by her denomination of State, e.g. Dominican Republic. The patriotic name for this country is mentioned in her National Anthem, but has not yet been included as the proper name of the country in her constitution, which has been amended several times since it was first written in 1844. Thus, Quisqueya is the name of the country occupying 2/3 (The Eastern part) of the island of Santo Domingo, regardless of conflicting theories whether the name Quisqueya existed or was invented by writers covering the discovery and awaiting for congress to insert the name in her constitution. Even when international treaties only the name Santo Domingo is used for the island, the Constitution of Haiti names the island "Haiti", while the Constitution of Dominican Republic names it Santo Domingo.--> /*See also Constitution of Dominican Republic*/ /*See also Island of Santo Domingo Treaties*/ /*See also Constitution of Haiti*/ |
