Pyogenic refers to bacterial infections that make pus.^[1]

The pus is mostly composed of dead neutrophils that are destroyed by bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus through the release of leukocidins. Therefore leukocidin producing bacteria are usually referred to as pyogenic.^[2]

The name for pyogenic granuloma is misleading because it is not a true granuloma and is not pus forming. Actually, it is a capillary hemangioma of lobular subtype which is the reason they are often quite prone to bleeding.^[3]
