Tiana is a Disney Princess, the protagonist of Disney's 2009 film The Princess and the Frog.[1] At the start of the movie she is a waitress and aspiring restaurant owner[2] living in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the Jazz Age. She is voiced by Anika Noni Rose[3] and is the ninth Disney Princess to join the official franchise.[4]
[edit] DevelopmentTiana is the first black princess in the Disney Princess franchise.[3][5][2][6] She is the second American Disney Princess, after Pocahontas. Tiana was originally named Maddy and worked as a chambermaid,[7] but her character's name was later changed to Tiana and her job, a waitress.[2] Disney spokeswoman Heidi Trotta stated "Princess Tiana will be a heroine in the great tradition of Disney’s rich animated fairy tale legacy, and all other characters and aspects of the story will be treated with the greatest respect and sensitivity."[8] [edit] Voice castingIn February 2007, it was reported that Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose were top contenders for the voice of Tiana, and that Alicia Keys directly contacted Disney's studio chief Dick Cook, telling him that she wanted the role very much.[9] It was later revealed that Tyra Banks was considered for the role as well.[10] On April 19, 2007, it was confirmed that Anika Noni Rose would be voicing Princess Tiana.[11] [edit] ProfileTiana is a young waitress and talented chef who dreams of owning her own restaurant like her and her father dreamed of doing.[2] She is a "diamond in the rough" who will have to learn some lessons before she reaches true princess status.[3] Director John Musker stated that Tiana will be one of the "strongest" Disney heroines yet.[2] She is a motivated, determined, and independent young woman. She wants to do things her way, without help from anyone.[3] Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Tiana says: "She’s a strong woman who doesn’t need anyone to do things for her...She wants to do things for herself."[3] She must learn that balance is important in life; to be happy, she needs both love and a career.[2] [edit] Appearances[edit] The Princess and the FrogMain article: The Princess and the Frog A press release describes the story as follows:
