The Primera División de Costa Rica is the highest division of Costa Rican football. It is composed of 12 teams; currently, the bottom team in Primera División is relegated and the top team in Segunda División is promoted. Deportivo Saprissa has been the most successful team in the competition, having won it on 28 occasions.

In the year 1921, the Federacion Costarricense de Futbol is created by Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, Club Sport Cartaginés, Club Sport Herediano, Club Sport la Libertad, Gimnástica Española y Gimnástica Limonense, and the Primera Division is launched on the same year. In 1999, the FEDEFUTBOL, created UNAFUT to operate the Primera Division and the Alto Rendimiento y Juvenil Especial (Youth Development Leagues from teams of First Division. Herediano hoping to get a victory in this tournament to end a 22 year deficit without a championship.
