Prairie Knolls Middle School, is a public middle school located in Elgin, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of Central Community Unit School District 301.

The school was opened in 2007 to grades 6-8. Opening Prairie Knolls Middle School alleviated crowding at District 301's other middle school, Central Middle School, and saved the district roughly $186,900 in 2007 -- money it is not spending on the six mobile classrooms and their traffic barrier at Central Middle. Prairie Knolls is a much larger school compared to the smaller Central Middle School. It has two floors in comparison to 1 floor. [1]

[edit] STAR Program

STAR (Students That Accept Responsibility), is a program that focuses on the character traits of respect, responsibility, integrity, perseverance, fairness, acceptance, citizenship and compassion.STAR is student-led, with students planning and implementing activities and service projects throughout the year. The primary focus of this program is to develop in each student, the knowledge and desire to practice good character in all aspects of their lives. To accomplish this, each student must feel that his or her efforts have an impact on the school environment. Edward Hale states, “… it has to start with each of us. It is true I am only one, but I am one. And the fact that I cannot do everything will not prevent me from doing what I can do.”

[edit] Sports

The basketball league is in the Big Northern Conference. During the 2008 season of basket ball the 7th grade team did much better than the 8th grade team. The 8th grade team lost all accept for one game, during the playoffs.

[edit] 2009 Farewell

On the web page of the Falcons read the following. It is hard to believe that we are about ready to say good -bye to our second year at Prairie Knolls Middle School. Explore PKMS was held at PKMS on May 6th and was an active and engaging evening for all families. The staff put a lot of thought and preparation into making sure this was an enjoyable evening. Without the dedication and hard work of these individuals, evenings like Explore PKMS would not be possible. Additionally, there was a presentation on Internet Safety for parents and students from 6:30— 7:30 in the gymnasium. Please take time to send an email, note, etc. to let staff know how much you enjoyed it. PTO held an informal meeting at 6:15— 6:30 to discuss officers and opportunities for next year in the library at PKMS during Explore PKMS. I am not sure if all members of our school community have heard through the grapevine that Mr. Janisch, Dean of Students and Athletic Director will be leaving us to take on a Principalship in Sycamore where he will be opening a new elementary school. We know that he will be a large loss to Prairie Knolls Middle School. His ability to mentor and help shape the character of our youth will be sorely missed. Please wish him well as he takes on this new and exciting professional opportunity. We are currently interviewing for a new Dean of Students. Ms. Brackmann has been named as the new Athletic Director for the 2009-2010 school year. She has coached for many years and brings many assets to the program. Please make sure to congratulate her on this new role. We wish the best of luck to both Mr. Janisch and Ms. Brackmann.

[edit] Staff

Prairie Knolls only has a staff of 47 people. Some 35 of them are educators.
