Legislative elections in Portugal were held on 27 September 2009 to renew all 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic.[1] The Socialist Party, led by incumbent Prime Minister José Sócrates, won the largest number of seats, but didn't repeat the overall majority they gained in 2005.[2] According to what the polls predicted, the Socialist Party of Prime Minister José Sócrates came in first, while losing its absolute majority and by undergoing a sharp decline of around 9 points. This regression of the center-left has not greatly benefited the Social Democratic Party of Manuela Ferreira Leite, which hardly improved its score. The surprise of this election was the Popular Party (CDS/PP). Indeed, the nationalist Paulo Portas ranks third, defied expectations and gets one of its best results since 1976. To the left of the left hand no surprise: the Left Block (BE) supplants the Unitarian Democratic Coalition as the first force, and the two formations obtain a result consistent with opinion polls. Neither of the two major parties won an absolute majority in the Assembly of the Republic, so, the future prime minister must form a coalition, or at least rely on other parties to govern. In this case, José Sócrates is in a better position than Manuela Ferreira Leite, since the Portuguese left won by 54.23% of the vote and 128 seats, 39.54% against and 102 deputies to the right. With 230 seats the results are:[3] [edit] Opinion polling e • d | Date of poll | Institute | PS | PSD | CDU | BE | CDS-PP | | 2005 election | — | 45.0% | 28.8% | 7.6% | 6.4% | 7.3% | | March 2005 | Marktest | 52.0% | 26.0% | 7.0% | 7.0% | 5.0% | | June 2005 | Marktest | 46.0% | 28.0% | 11.0% | 7.0% | 4.0% | | June 2005 | Universidade Catolica | 42.0% | 31.0% | 11.0% | 8.0% | 3.0% | | September 2006 | Marktest | 46.0% | 30.0% | 11.0% | 8.0% | 2.0% | | October 2006 | Marktest | 42.0% | 30.0% | 11.0% | 10.0% | 4.0% | | January 2007 | Marktest | 43.0% | 28.0% | 9.0% | 8.0% | 8.0% | | June 2007 | Marktest | 40.0% | 29.0% | 10.0% | 9.0% | 7.0% | | July 2007 | Marktest | 44.0% | 29.0% | 8.0% | 9.0% | 6.0% | | October 2007 | Marktest | 37.0% | 36.0% | 12.0% | 8.0% | 3.0% | | November 2007 | Marktest | 44.0% | 32.0% | 9.0% | 7.0% | 5.0% | | January 2008 | Marktest | 38.0% | 34.0% | 10.0% | 7.0% | 6.0% | | February 2008 | Marktest | 36.1% | 33.4% | 12.8% | 8.0% | 5.6% | | March 2008 | Marktest | 37.8% | 31.9% | 12.1% | 10.4% | 4.0% | | April 2008 | Marktest | 38.0% | 31.5% | 10.8% | 11.5% | 4.3% | | May 2008 | Marktest | 33.0% | 32.0% | 12.8% | 11.3% | 6.7% | | June 2008 | Marktest | 35.2% | 30.8% | 11.1% | 12.3% | 6.7% | | July 2008 | Marktest | 36.7% | 32.7% | 10.0% | 11.4% | 5.1% | | September 2008 | Marktest | 36.1% | 29.3% | 12.6% | 10.9% | 7.1% | | October 2008 | Marktest | 39.8% | 28.7% | 10.0% | 11.4% | 6.4% | | November 2008 | Marktest | 40.1% | 26.4% | 10.0% | 13.1% | 6.2% | | December 2008 | Marktest | 39.9% | 25.7% | 11.0% | 11.6% | 8.0% | | January 2009 | Marktest | 39.6% | 24.9% | 11.9% | 10.1% | 9.7% | | February 2009 | Marktest | 38.2% | 28.8% | 10.6% | 14.0% | 4.1% | | March 2009 | Marktest | 36.7% | 28.4% | 8.9% | 12.6% | 9.4% | | April 2009 | Marktest | 36.2% | 26.4% | 11.2% | 13.6% | 8.3% | | May 2009 | Marktest | 36.3% | 28.3% | 9.4% | 14.7% | 7.1% | | June 2009 | Marktest | 34.5% | 35.8% | 7.7% | 11.4% | 4.4% | | June 2009 | Eurosondagem | 35.1% | 33.0% | 9.7% | 9.6% | 7.4% | | July 2009 | Marktest | 35.5% | 34.2% | 7.4% | 14.3% | 4.4% | | July 2009 | Aximage | 30.5% | 30.3% | 9.5% | 13.3% | 6.1% | | July 2009 | Eurosondagem | 33.0% | 31.1% | 9.4% | 10.0% | 8.5% | | September 1-4, 2009 | Aximage | 34.5% | 28.9% | 7.8% | 10.4% | 8.1% | | September 4-7, 2009 | Marktest | 35.3% | 32.4% | 6.9% | 16.2% | 5.2% | | September 4-8, 2009 | Universidade Católica | 37.0% | 35.0% | 8.0% | 11.0% | 6.0% | | September 6-9, 2009 | Eurosondagem | 33.6% | 32.5% | 9.4% | 9.6% | 8.0% | | September 11-14, 2009 | Universidade Católica | 38.0% | 32.0% | 7.0% | 12.0% | 7.0% | | September 12-15, 2009 | INTERCAMPUS | 32.9% | 29.7% | 9.2% | 12.0% | 7.0% | | September 13-16, 2009 | Eurosondagem | 34.9% | 31.6% | 8.4% | 9.6% | 8.4% | | September 14-17, 2009 | Aximage | 36.1% | 29.7% | 7.5% | 10.0% | 7.6% | | September 17-22, 2009 | Universidade Católica | 38.0% | 30.0% | 7.0% | 11.0% | 8.0% | | September 18-21, 2009 | Marktest | 40.0% | 31.6% | 7.2% | 9.2% | 8.2% | | September 21-23, 2009 | INTERCAMPUS | 38.0% | 29.9% | 8.4% | 9.4% | 7.7% | | September 21-24, 2009 | Aximage | 38.8% | 29.1% | 8.4% | 10.0% | 8.6% | [edit] National summary of votes and seats e • d | Portuguese legislative election, 2009 (September 27) | | Party | Votes | % | +/- | Seats | +/- | | PS | 2,077,695 | 36.55 | -8.4 | 97 | -24 | | PSD | 1,654,777 | 29.11 | 0.3 | 81 | 6 | | CDS/PP | 592,997 | 10.43 | 3.1 | 21 | 9 | | BE | 558,062 | 9.82 | 3.4 | 16 | 8 | | CDU | 446,994 | 7.86 | 0.4 | 15 | 1 | | PCTP-MRPP | 52,784 | 0.93 | 0.1 | 0 | - | | MEP | 25,475 | 0.45 | - | 0 | - | | PND | 21,476 | 0.38 | -0.3 | 0 | - | | MMS | 16,616 | 0.29 | - | 0 | - | | PPM | 15,090 | 0.27 | - | 0 | - | | MPT-PH | 12,307 | 0.22 | - | 0 | - | | PNR | 11,628 | 0.20 | 0.0 | 0 | - | | PPV | 8,533 | 0.15 | - | 0 | - | | PTP | 4,789 | 0.08 | - | 0 | - | | POUS | 4,320 | 0.08 | -0.1 | 0 | - | | MPT | 3,240 | 0.06 | - | 0 | - | | Blank Ballots | 99,161 | 1.74 | - | - | - | | Invalid Ballots | 78,023 | 1.37 | - | - | - | | Total | 5,683,967 | 100.00 | - | 230 | - | - Registered Voters: 9,514,322
