The Political Studies Association of the United Kingdom (PSA) is an association of political scientists that exists to develop and promote the study of politics in the United Kingdom. It is the leading association in its field in the UK, with an international membership including academics in political science and current affairs, theorists and practitioners, policy makers, researchers and students in higher education.

Contents

[edit] Founding

The PSA was founded in 1950, following the establishment of the International Political Science Association in 1949, and was initially supported by a grant from UNESCO.[1]

[edit] Publications

The PSA publishes four journals:

  • British Journal of Politics and International Relations
  • Political Studies: publishes research in all areas of politics and international relations. The journal's approach is not dominated by a particular methodological or theoretical framework. Indeed the editors have expressed their wish to encourage a pluralism and debate between approaches. [2]
  • Political Studies Review: provides not only reviews of new books and literature on political science and international relations but also provides a forum for wide-ranging debates and reviews.[3]
  • Politics.

[edit] Awards

The PSA holds an annual awards ceremony, giving prizes to political scientists, journalists and politicians. In 2000, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the PSA also awarded one-off Lifetime Achievement Awards to Brian Barry, Jean Blondel, David Butler, Bernard Crick, Stanley Hoffmann and Richard Rose.[4]

[edit] PSA "specialist" groups

The PSA has a network of "specialist" groups. There purpose is to promote high quality research and provide a research focus for PSA members and for them to receive support from the PSA.[5]

[edit] Political economy specialist group

This specialist group applies both a contemporary and historical perspective to Political Economy. It's objectives are as follows: the organisation of conference and workshop activities, to provide information and discussion tools for the political economy community, to stimulate post-graduate work, to link political economists with scholarship in other countries and other fields and to raise the profile of the PSA within the established political economy community. The group is administered by Ben Rosamond (Convenor), Matthew Watson‎ (Treasurer) and Christopher Holmes (Website).[6]
