Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport (IATA: PNR, ICAO: FCPP), is an important airport located in Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo. It is one of the two international airports in the country, the other being Brazzaville Maya-Maya Airport. The airport was inaugurated in 1934. Constructions have since been made to increase its capacity. It is currently able to serve ten million passengers a year. A new terminal has recently been opened which is a massive improvement on the previous ‘cow shed’ building that was used. However, the new terminal is already showing signs of poor maintenance and neglect. Several accidents has occurred at the airport, one Il-76 burnt down when on a standstill and one An-12 and B727 hit each other during a taxi accident. As with many airports in West Africa Pointe Noire Airport it is seriously over staffed yet amazingly inefficient. Travellers through the airport, especially when departing, are pressured to give over money by airport officials (especially by the ‘security’ at the x-ray machine) with threats of being denied departure.
