Pločnik (Плочник) is a village in the municipality of Prokuplje, Toplica District, Republic of Serbia. According to the 2002 population census, it's populated by 182, all of whom declared Serbs. Not long ago, an important European-archaeology excavation site has been founded in Pločnik. It was the seat of the historical notable 1386 Battle of Pločnik. Ottoman Sultan Murad I led a sizable Turkish Army in an invasion of Serbia. Moravian Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović led the Serbian Army to intercept him. The Ottoman army suffered a defeat. However though beaten, the Turkish forces were still strong enough to conquer Niš from the Prince on their return. Nearby is the 120 hectare Pločnik archaeology site. The Pločnik settlement, which flourished from 5500 BC until it was destroyed by a fire in 4700 BC, is part of the Neolithic Vinča culture which was Europe's largest prehistoric civilization. On October 9, 2008, Serbian archaeologists in Plocnik found a copper axe believed to be 500-800 years older than the actual beginning of the Copper Age, suggesting that the human use of metal is older than believed[1][2][3].
