Phoenix had a sizable hardcore punk scene in the 1980's that focused mainly around three bands from the city's east side, the Feederz, Meat Puppets and JFA. Meat Puppets, led by the Kirkwood brothers, Curt and Cris, signed to Greg Ginn's SST Records and released several albums that proved to be highly influential on groups like Nirvana. Other bands include Sun City Girls, Desecration, The Zany Guys, Junior Achievement, O.N.S. (Our Neighbors Suck )Andy Lane, Paige Richards, Johnny Beluzzi, Jack Taylor-Galbraith, Armondo Nunez, and Mighty Sphincter. That scene, limited to only a few gay bars and punk clubs in run-down neighborhoods, was largely over by 1986, however a small but dedicated scene continued to thrive in relative obscurity throughout the late 80s- mid 90s. Currently, the Phoenix area hardcore scene has splintered into the many different subgenres that are common around the country. With the likes of Pigeon Religion, who are possibly the biggest punk band to come out of Arizona since JFA, Ready Set Die, Where Eagles Dare and others setting the tone for the current crop of bands including: Think Fast, Prosthetics, Nearest The Positive, Amongst Kings, Bring Forth The Enemy, Red Son, Get Destroyed!, Warfair?, Speak, Run With the Hunted, The Revenge, Sigma, North Side Kings, Move Forward, and many others; there is no "definitive" Phoenix Hardcore sound in the late 2000s.
