Phil Bryant (born 9 Dec 1954[1]) is an American politician from Mississippi. Bryant is currently the Republican Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, having defeated the Democratic Party candidate, Representative Jamie Franks, in the 2007 general election.
[edit] EducationBryant holds undergraduate degrees from Hinds Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. He earned a master's degree at Mississippi College, where he currently (while also serving as Lieutenant Governor) is a professor teaching Mississippi political history.[2] [edit] CareerBryant became State Auditor of Mississippi in November 1996 when he was appointed to this position by former Governor Kirk Fordice. Bryant was elected to a full term as State Auditor in November 1999 and re-elected in 2003. Prior to becoming State Auditor, Bryant served five years as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, where he was the Vice Chairman of the Insurance Committee and authored the Capital Gains Tax Cut Act of 1992.
