Margaret "Pegeen" Hanrahan (born c. 1966) is mayor (as of 2009[update]) of Gainesville, Florida, her native city. Described by The Nation as a "vegetarian, bike-riding environmentalist", Hanrahan has been active in politics since she was a teenager. An environmental engineer, she was elected to the Gainesville City Commission in 1995, and was elected mayor in 2004. In the 2007 mayoral election she was re-elected to another term. She is term-limited, her current term scheduled to lapse in 2010.
[edit] Early life and careerHanrahan received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Florida.[1] In 2003 she married to Tony Malone. They gave birth to their daughter, Evyleen, in 2005 and son, Quinn, in 2007.[2] [edit] Electoral historyMayor Hanrahan was re-elected on March 6, 2007 beating her opponent Wesley Watson with 73% of the vote.[3]
