The Peerage of Ireland is the term used for those peers created by British monarchs in their capacity as Lord or King of Ireland. This practice ended with the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. Before 1801, Irish Peers had the right to sit in the Irish House of Lords, but after the Union in 1801, Irish peers elected just 28 representative peers to the House of Lords (see List of Irish representative peers). Irish Peerages continued to be created for some time after 1801 as a way of creating peerages which did not grant a seat in the House of Lords, although the treaty of Union placed restrictions on them: three had to go extinct before one could be granted, at least until there were only 100 Irish peerages. The last to be granted was for Lord Curzon in 1898. The ranks of the Irish peerage are Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount and Baron. In the following table of the Peerage of Ireland as it currently stands, each peer's highest titles in each of the other Peerages (if any) are also listed. The modern state of Ireland does not confer or formally recognise peerages,[1] except by courtesy. A peer may however use their titular name in place of their surname. Through its House of Lords in Westminster, the British Crown continues to exercise its prerogatives to determine the succession of peers in the Peerage of Ireland, including those whose titles derive from territorial denominations located in the Republic of Ireland.
