The Hebrew word parashah (plural: parashot or parashiyyot) narrowly means section, portion, or event. The word is often written and pronounced as parshah or parsha. It usually refers to one of the following:

1. In rabbinic literature, halakhah and biblical studies, parashah properly refers to a section of a biblical book in the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible (somewhat resembling a modern paragraph).
2. In popular parlance, parashah is usually used as a shortened form of the term parashat ha-shavua, the Weekly Torah portion read in the synagogue. Some Ashkenazim traditionally use the word Sidra or Sedra instead of parashah with the same meaning, but parashah is by far the more popular term, especially in modern spoken Hebrew.
3. Occasionally parashah refers to one of the seven divisions of a sedra.
