[edit] History

It was started in 1970, partially in reaction to the desegregation of the McComb, Mississippi public schooling system[1]. In fact, in a city that was 58.40% African-American as of the 2000 census[2], no African-American children had attended Parklane Academy as of 1975[3]. As of May 1999, Parklane Academy has awarded a high school diploma to its first African-American graduate, a little over 10 years after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision that mandated the desegregation of public school systems.

[edit] Notable alumni

  • William W. (Bill) Parsons,[4] Center Director, John F. Kennedy Space Center[5]
  • Russell L. Stogner, owner and operator of The Stogner Agency in McComb, MS, won All-District baseball honors in 1979 and 1980, also won MVP honors in 1980.
  • Jeff Calhoun, former Major League Baseball pitcher.
  • It is the school Britney Spears attended until ninth grade, and is also the school which her little sister Jamie Lynn Spears attended prior to her pregnancy (finished tenth grade) before she completed her education by correspondence, because of her work for Zoey 101 on Nickelodeon. The two did not graduate from Parklane.[6]
