Parc des Princes, current stadia of PSG.
PSG started the new season with the prospect of regaining their european status, as seen in their President's words (Robin Leproux): "We want to advance PSG steadily. We must be capable in the medium term to sustain €15-20 million of additional revenue from our current turnover. With a budget of €100-100m, we could have a team capable of sustained play in the UEFA Champions League." With a new season starting, Robin Leproux has stated what he expects from the new coach and PSG former player, Antoine Kombouaré: "This season, he will qualify for a European cup, but not necessarily the Champions League. The shareholders are always right to increase expectations."[1]
[edit] NewsOn 5 May 2009, PSG released an official statement announcing that the club will not renewed the contract of coach Paul Le Guen, which expired on 30 June 2009, and that the name of the club's next coach will be made public in the coming weeks.[2] On 29 May 2009, PSG, Valenciennes, and Antoine Kombouaré reached a final agreement which allowed Kombouaré to join PSG as first team coach from next season.[3] On 28 July 2009, Sébastien Bazin, president of Colony Capital Europe, the major shareholder of PSG and president of the club's administrative council, announced that Robin Leproux joined the club's board of directors.[4] Over the summer of 2009, PSG reinforced their squad with the signings of Sochaux striker Mevlüt Erdinç for a reported €9 million,[5] Atlético Madrid and former Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Grégory Coupet for €800,000,[6] Lorient defender Christophe Jallet for €2.5 million[7] and Valenciennes goalkeeper, Willy Grondin, after terminating his contract with Les Athéniens,[8] while Albert Baning, Granddi Ngoyi, Younousse Sankharé, and Yannick Boli returned from their loan spells at Grenoble, Clermont Foot, Stade de Reims and Le Havre, respectively. On the other hand, Jérôme Rothen was loaned to Rangers until the end of the 2009–10 season with a purchase option of €1.5 million,[9] while Everton Santos was loaned to japanese club Albirex Niigata.[10] Although PSG made effective the purchase option over Mateja Kežman who was in loan from Fenerbahçe, the club loaned the Serbian striker to Zenit Saint Petersburg until the end of the 2009–10 season with an undisclosed purchase option.[11] Due to the new signings, PSG needed to lighten their squad with a few departures. During the summer window, the capital club transferred Larrys Mabiala to Nice on a free transfer,[12] Souza to Grêmio for €2 million,[13] Gaëtan Charbonnier to Angers on a free transfer,[14] Mickaël Landreau to Lille for €1.6 million[15] and Youssuf Mulumbu to West Bromwich Albion for €180,000,[16] while Stéphane Véron and Fabrice Pancrate were released. On 18 November 2009, the club announced, through its official website, that television channel Direct 8 would become PSG's shirt sponsor for three "gala" Ligue 1 matches this season.[17] [edit] Transfers[edit] In

[edit] Competitions[edit] OverallThis season PSG will be present in the three french competitions: Ligue 1 2009–10, the 2009–10 Coupe de France and the 2009–10 Coupe de la Ligue. The previous season's flop in the last matches prevented PSG to participate in consecutive years in a european competition. [edit] Top Scorers
[edit] Ligue 1Main article: Ligue 1 2009–10 The 2009–10 Ligue 1 season is the 72nd since its establishment. Bordeaux are the defending champions. The fixtures were announced on 5 June 2009[25], and play commenced on 8 August and will end on 15 May 2010.[26] There were three promoted teams from Ligue 2, replacing the three teams that were relegated from Ligue 1 following the 2008–09 season. A total of 20 teams are competing in the league with three clubs suffering relegation to the second division, Ligue 2. All clubs that secured Ligue 1 status for this season were subject to approval by the DNGC before becoming eligible to participate.[27][28] In addition, German sportswear company Puma became the official provider of match balls for this season after agreeing to a long term partnership with the Ligue de Football Professionnel.[29] Paris Saint-Germain began their league campaign on the road taking on Montpellier at the Stade de la Mosson. Just as PSG was preparing to start the Ligue 1 season with a win Montpellier equalised deep into stoppage time as the game finished 1-1. Right up until the final seconds, Antoine Kombouaré's seemed assured of the three points. Claude Makélélé decided to take matters into his own hands with a long-range effort which surprised Jourdren. The Montpellier goalkeeper could only push the ball back out where Ludovic Giuly arrived to side-foot home into the empty net (0-1; 71'). But Emir Spahić's header saw René Girard's players earn a share of the spoils. With the final whistle just moments away, PSG were heading for a winning start when Spahić struck with that telling header at the back post (1-1; 93').[30] PSG's first at home was against Le Mans. PSG earned a great 3-1 win over Le Mans in their first home outing at the Parc des Princes this season. Trailing early on, the Parisians came back and then marched away with the match. Despite a good start, PSG got caught out by a long Roche clearance. Helstad was through against Coupet and he fired in off the woodwork (0-1, 21'). Stunned, Les Parisiens responded ten minutes later through Mevlüt Erdinç. The Turkey international beat his two markers before firing past Rodolphe Roche with a angled left-foot finish (1-1, 35'). In the second half, a Le Mans player, Frédéric Thomas, turned a Stéphane Sessegnon free-kick into his own net (2-1, 60'). Then Giuly chose to strike. Set free by Mateja Kežman, the former Barcelona ace beat Roche with a low finish (3-1, 81').[31] The following week, PSG faced Valenciennes on the road. The capital club recorded their second consecutive win courtesy of a 3-2 triumph away to Valenciennes in Week 3 of Ligue 1. Jérémy Clément played the ball to Péguy Luyindula who, beating Guy N'dy Assembé, opened the scoring thanks to a good combination with Erdinç (0-1, 35'). But the capital club didn't stop there and after two mistakes from Gaëtan Bong and then N'dy Assembé, Erdinç doubled the advantage (0-2, 56'). Just when the game seemed in the bag, Siaka Tiéné beat Grégory Coupet with a stunning free-kick (1-2, 58'). Released by Sessegnon, Christophe Jallet broke into the area and unleashed a powerful shot (1-3, 84'). Again, Les Athéniens responded when Rudy Mater sent a missile crashing in the back of the net (2-3, 90’). But it was too late as the referee whistle the end of the match.[32] The next week, PSG returned home and were victors again claiming a 3–0 victory over Lille, recording a third consecutive victory. From a cleared corner Jérémy Clément sent a stunning volley from 25 metres out that ended in the the top corner (1-0, 28'). After the break, Luyindula benefitted from a good combination from Sylvain Armand and Christophe Jallet to double the advantage (2-0, 78'). In stoppage time, Jallet beat Ludovic Butelle with a long range volley (3-0, 91'). This three consecutive victories moved PSG into 2nd place.[33] Following a long international break, Monaco received PSG at the Stade Louis II, where the capital club went down 2-0. Despite a good performance, PSG suffered their first defeat of the season in the dying minutes, thanks to goals from Park Chu-Young (1-0, 86') and Nenê (2-0, 89'). The game also saw Stéphane Sessegnon being sent off (90'). The defeat saw PSG move into 5th place.[34] Next week's match against Lyon was going to prove to be the first true test for Les Parisiens as they faced the game without their key player, Stéphane Sessegnon. Despite opening the scoring through Ludovic Giuly (1-0, 29'), PSG had to settle for a draw after Bafétimbi Gomis equalised, with five minutes left to play, from an off side position (1-1, 85'). The minutes prior to the match saw the auspices of the new Passion PSG[35] membership and a kick off given by Pauleta.[36] After a frustrating draw to Lyon, Les Parisiens were looking to return to winning ways at the expense of Lorient. Despite this, the capital club returned from Brittany with back-to-back draws after the match ended 1-1 in Week 7 of Ligue 1. Five minutes before the half-time, Arnold Mvuemba beat Coupet after a great team work (1-0, 40'). Just as they thought they be enjoying a one goal advantage at half-time, Hoarau stunned the home side finishing a brilliant team move (1-1, 45+1'). It was Hoarau's first goal of the season.[37] Despite being superior in all domains, Antoine Kombouaré's side were unable to put their chances away and conceded a third consecutive draw against Nancy, thus losing more ground to their title rivals at the top of the table. The game started badly for PSG as Nancy opened the scoring thanks to Youssouf Hadji's goal (0-1, 14'). But the reaction was immediate as Sessegnon gave the capital club the equalizer four minutes later (1-1, 18'). After that PSG dominated the entire game but the ball just wouldn't go in. This three consecutive draws saw PSG drop to 7th place in the table.[38] Now Les Parisiens have to prepare for consecutive away games at Toulouse and then Marseille after the international break. Following the international break, Toulouse received PSG at the Stadium Municipal, where the capital club went down 1-0. Antoine Kombouaré's side were caught out by a rare Toulouse counterattack, finished off by Albin Ebondo (1-0, 74'). After another solid performance, Les Parisiens were beaten by a great team goal from Alain Casanova's side, although they rarely threatened Grégory Coupet's goal.[39] On 25 October 2009, Paris Saint-Germain's eagerly-anticipated encounter with arch-rivals Marseille was postponed on the recommendation of the LFP's Expert Medical Commission. The panel had initially given the Ligue 1 'clasico' the green light on Saturday, despite confirmation that two PSG players had contracted swine flu. However, an official LFP statement said the commission had reversed the decision at Sunday and placed the PSG squad and staff in a 72-hour quarantine. Ludovic Giuly and Mamadou Sakho were the first to be infected, before Jérémy Clément also picked up the H1N1 virus and, according to reports, Loris Arnaud and a member of staff have also succumbed. The date of the rescheduled match has yet to be decided.[40][41] Following the cancellation of the clash between Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain, the LFP announced the fixture will take place on November 20.[42] PSG returned to action on the road taking on Sochaux at the Stade Auguste Bonal. The match saw the capital club rediscover winning ways with a spectacular 4-1 win over Les Lionceaux. The game improved for PSG ten minutes before half-time when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Teddy Richert on Luyindula. Richert saved Erdinç's initial spot kick and the follow up from Christophe Jallet before finally succumbing to Clément's near-range finish (0-1, 35'). In the second half Les Parisiens doubled the advantage through a wonderful chip over Richert by Clément Chantôme (0-2, 56'). Twenty minutes later, Erdinç killed off Sochaux's ambitions of a comeback (0-3, 75'). Minutes later the Turkish international was substituted and received a standing ovation from the public. Although the match was decided, Francis Gillot's men manage a consolation goal thanks to former PSG man Stéphane Dalmat's 25 metres shot (1-3, 86'). However, the capital club responded within a minute via Luyindula (1-4, 87'). The win sealed PSG' first victory in over two months and moved the club into the top half of the table.[43] A week after the huge success at Sochaux, PSG was surprised by Nice late in the game after finding the post three times. PSG dominated the entire game but the ball just wouldn't go in and in the dying minutes Loïc Rémy headed the goal for the visitors (0-1, 88'). This was PSG's third defeat in the season and its first at Le Parc. The defeat moved the capital club to the 12th position.[44] During the international break, the club played a friendly match against Portuguese side Sporting Braga at the Parc des Princes. Author of a brace and an assist, Clément Chantôme was the star of the match as PSG defeated Braga 3-1.[45] Now Les Parisiens have to prepare for the biggest game of the year against arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome. PSG underperformed and Marseille produced a dominant display in the rescheduled Clasico. The capital club rarely troubled their hosts who netted the only goal of the game from a set piece. Antoine Kombouaré's starting XI looked good on paper, with Zoumana Camara returning to action in the centre of the defence. However, Les Rouge-et-Bleu were quickly on the back foot. PSG struggled to break out of their own half and conceded free-kick after free-kick, and in the 24th minute they conceded another one. Souleymane Diawara, deflected the ball down to the head of Gabriel Heinze and the rebound lobbed over Coupet (1-0, 25'). After the break, PSG fought back, but neither Erding's or Jean-Eudes Maurice's effort could level the scoreboard. The club conceded its second consecutive defeat and moved to the 13th place in the league. Now PSG has to bounce back against the leader, Auxerre, next weekend at Le Parc.[46] [edit] League Table
