[edit] Gameplay

Pain is a video game in which players attempt to damage the ragdoll character they play and the environment as much as possible by flinging them from a rubber-band catapult, using the Havok physics engine. Replay videos can be watched, and can be edited and uploaded to YouTube or the PlayStation 3's hard disc drive.[5]

[edit] Characters

The player starts with the character Jarvis McBalsy. Other characters can be unlocked or purchased from the PlayStation Store, including Buzz (the host of a video game series of the same name[6]), David Hasselhoff, and Daxter.[7] Non-playable characters are in the background of the game and can be targets of a playable character.

[edit] Additional downloads

Originally, the only playable area was the Downtown theme which was the theme that was released with the game. As of September 11, 2008, both Downtown and the "Abusement Park" are playable; the Abusement Park is accessible via the PlayStation Store. The Movie Lot Environment was released on November 13, 2008. The "Sore Spots" expansion, released on May 14, 2009, added two new environments: Area 69 and the Morningwood High gymnasium; both accessible via the PlayStation Store. The Pain museum pack add-on has also been released.

[edit] Theme song

The Pain theme song was made by Chuck Carr, and is downloadable through the PlayStation Store.

[edit] PAINlabs

PainLabs are small levels, one of which takes the place of the last one released every Thursday.

[edit] Reviews

The game has received mixed reviews and has an aggregate score of 71% on Metacritic.[8] GameSpot gave the game a 7.5/10, praising the game for its "great use of Havok physics engine" and "smartly sophomoric sense of humor", but criticized it for having just one level.[9] IGN gave the game a 6.8/10 commenting that "One level, two characters, no online multiplayer and no way to share crazy clips sucks. However, there are a ton of trophies to unlock."[10]

Since the time of these reviews, several levels, online multiplayer, and new playable characters have been added.
