The French Republic (French: République française), commonly known as France, is a sovereign country comprising a metropolitan territory located in Western Europe and numerous overseas territories around the world.[1] Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel, and from the Rhine and Alpes to the Atlantic Ocean. French citizens often refer to Metropolitan France as L’Hexagone (The “Hexagon”) because of the geometric shape of its territory.
