Subject to various definitions, Northern United States may refer to or include all or part of a large geographic area of the United States of America. The United States Census Bureau divides some of the northernmost United States into the Midwest Region and Northeast Region.^[1] The Census Bureau also includes states adjacent to the United States northern border with Canada within the West Region.^[1]

All or part of the area is sometimes referred to as the "North," sometimes in contrast to the "South."^{[by whom?]} Historically, one definition for the North is that of the states that comprised the non-slaveholding Union states that remained loyal to the United States during the American Civil War.^[2]
