North Hamgyŏng (Hamgyŏng-pukto) is a province of North Korea. The province was formed in 1896 from the northern half of the former Hamgyŏng Province.
[edit] GeographyThe province is bordered by China on the north, South Hamgyong on the southwest, and Ryanggang on the west. On the east is the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea). There is also a short border with Russia. Rasŏn Directly Governed City, in the northeast corner of the province, was separated from North Hamgyŏng in 1993. The province is home to the Musudan-ri rocket launching site, and was formerly the site of the Onsong concentration camp. In 2004 Rasŏn got reabsorb back into the province, but since 2006 Rasŏn is again a Directly Governed City.. [edit] Administrative divisionsNorth Hamgyŏng is divided into 4 cities ("Si") and 13 counties ("Kun"). Two of these 4 cities (Ch'ŏngjin) is further divided into 7 wards ("Kuyeok") and (Rasŏn) is further divided into 1 wards ("Kuyeok") and 1 counties ("Kun"). [edit] Cities
