Nnewi is the second largest city in Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria, in the region formerly known as Biafra. Nnewi comprises four autonomous villages, Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewi-Ichi. Ichi ,a brother of Nnewi, an autonomous town ,and a satellite town, being a brother of Nnewi according to Anaedo legend, is an intergal part of Nnewi city. Together Nnewi and its satellite towns have a population of about 2.5 million (2005 est.), with Nnewi itself having an estimated population of 204,252 (2007 estimate).[1]

As a fast developing city and a major industrial and commercial hub in Africa, Nnewi experiences voluminous financial activities, therefore hosts major banks, and other financial institutions. Industries are dotted around the city and adjoining towns. Palm oil, cosmetics, motor, and motorcycle spare parts, books, and stationeries, textiles, electric cables, and so on are produced in commercial quantity in the area. As a result, Nnewi is commonly refers to as the " Japan of Africa". Nnewi host many festivals, notably amongst them is the New yam (Afiolu, also known as Ifejioku festival) which all parts of the city participates and masquerades from all federating towns participates in.
